HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #90: 2024-2025 season part III

Because aside from.Demidov the team doesn't have anything high end up front.
I know everybody is excited for Demi to show up and blow the doors off the league but maybe we need to temper our expectations some and let the kid find his way.

He's a very talented young player but we always seem to put so much pressure on our young prospects to be stars the first time they hit the ice for us. It's an extremely rare occurrence for that to happen.

He impressed me last night. Hands down the best player on the ice......at 37. Wow!
He would be so great for us. Experience, professionalism, ethic, winner and still able to produce at no.1 center pace. Let's say he can produce offensively at that pace for another 2 years. He makes us a playoffs team with Demidov also coming in. After his 2 years contract, you still can extend him to play middle 6 center with Hage to mentor him while we are contending.

He will learn to use his body effectively with experience. Also, he is big but I don't think he is as strong as his height and weight suggest. He will get stronger with time. It's just normal for a 20-21 years old.

At least he hits. He tries.
Then let’s cite his gaudy hit numbers when the hits actually matter. Otherwise it’s an exercise in self-deception. 110+ hits and they barely impact the game… it’s a big whocares.

With Shea Theodore out, not sure if he broke something or what the exact injury is, does Vegas have a need for a player like Matheson or are they deep enough to wait it out?

No it's not. At least he is showing he is not afraid to throw his body around. Everybody loves Bennett's way of playing. But he wasn't playing this way effectively at 21 years old.

The learning curves in the NHL is more than just points and back checking. That's why big guys take more time to reach their maturity.

What would it take to sign Marner as a FA?
do not want, don't need any more soft players who suck in the playoffs

He's already been traded to a new team. I think Rants is a different situation than your typical pending UFAs

Get the sense he really wants to hit open market and see what his offers look like before committing to anyone
he just traded a Rolex to get his number back from Roslovic he may be staying

True.

I meant to say potentially, but left that word out

So, really the Habs currently have nothing high end up front.

So, more reasons to really consider Marner should he make it to market.

I'm sure that roar for his goal last night might make him think "hey, maybe it wouldn't be bad here".

Or it didn't register at all.

I'M sure you will love him during the season. But come playoff time?
He is still a pt per game player during the playoffs. I wouldn't mind that.

The thing with the Habs is we need more toughness yes, absolutely, but we also need talent up front. You can't fill those holes with one player only.

Amen. Slaf is well on his way, patience isn't for everyone in this age of instant gratification.

Fair enough.

What is your definition of "high end"?

I doubt that they make a trade. They still have Hanifin and Pietrangelo. They don’t need to go crazy and add Matheson who would likely sit once Theodore comes back.

So.McCann is supposedly available. He seems to have shifted in and out of center but he's a left handed shooter. I'd rather target him than Cozens
I wonder what they would want for McCann he would be worth the 5M people want to give Evans.
I would think there would have to be a contract extension in place for us to move on him?
I really can't see us buying him for a year.

Wrist, but, apparently, not that serious.

Very true.............but he has almost dominated in the KHL.......the kid is amazing.
He will be a star............

...and again, it's all about cookies, right??...Marner WILTS come Playoff time; all that Free Ice he dipsy-doodles around doesn't exist in the Playoffs...someone else can pay him 13-14 mill to be a great REGULAR SEASON player...
You Need to reach the Players before winning in the Playoffs. Habs have had one playoff run because of Covid, in what 8 years ? We can make fun of leafs as much as we want, they have been a much better team since 2016, i.e. close to a decade now.

Ok I just had a really bad idea (and of course I gotta share it here :naughty:).

He’s old, slow and makes too much $ right now BUT let’s say hypothetically he accepts something like $7M for 3 years or something like that, would Tavares UFA as a stop gap make sense?

He’s a leftie, strong on FO, can drive his line if provided with young wingers, no need to spend assets to acquire him. Of course he’s kinda cooked and at $11M really not an option, but for Josh Anderson-like $, I think it would give us a 2C while we let Hage & all develop.

He barely plays C with the Leafs these days. His foot speed is disintegrating for that position.

A player who puts up 90+ points.

He's on pace for over 100 points and has been on pace for over 100 points a few times, but injuries are apart of the game and hasn't yet.

Had he reached that 100 point plateau and few times.in his career people would definitely be all for him.

Who's the last player to be a consistent 90 points player for the Habs?

You offer Marner a lot. I wouldn't go as crazy as I would with Rantanen, but he'd be up there.

14 mill a year for 7 years for Marner is probably a good contract in 2 years when teams paying 14 mill to a 70 point player.
