off a article I read

If Kent Hughes decided to submit an offer between $9.16 million and $11.45 million to Noah Dobson, the price to pay in terms of compensation would be two first-round picks (2026 and 2027), a second-round pick and a third-round pick, which is rather reasonable for one of the best right-handed defensemen in the Bettman circuit.

We're still talking about an imposing player at 6-foot-4 and 200 pounds, capable of playing close to 25 minutes per game. In addition to his solid defensive play, Dobson offers impressive offensive production, as evidenced by his 70 points in 79 games last season.

2 first round picks what could possibly go wrong?

Now is definitely the time to be aggressive, while we have the picks, prospects, U25 guys and expiring contracts flexibility. Target the guys you really want and go for it hard. You don't get to be in the right spot too often.
yup
need to be the aggressive KH. its time to set the tone and get the team to the next level

I’d do that at this point.

It’s easier to find a winger than a Top 4 RD, and I value Caufield and Demidov a lot more than Slaf.
Let's say we did part with Slafkovsky and Mailloux for Dobson (and kept our other assets, both prospects and futures), here's a short term look at our roster and a possible look three years down the line, with both Anderson and Gallagher gone, as well as Armia and Dvorak. Montreal, however, would also need to acquire a 2C on the UFA market, whether a shorter or longer term addition (Duchene or Bennett, as examples).

2025-2026

Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Demidov - UFA C - Laine
Heineman - Evans - Roy
Anderson - Beck - Davidson/Gallagher
Gallagher

Guhle - Dobson
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Carrier
Engstrom

Montembeault
Dobes

2027-2028

Demidov - UFA C - Laine
Caufield - Suzuki - Dach
Roy - Beck - Hage
Heineman - Evans - Davidson
F. Xhekaj

Guhle - Dobson
Hutson - Reinbacher
Xhekaj - Engstrom
Carrier

For a 2C option, I'm pondering whether it makes sense or not to bring in a well-established 30+ veteran (O'Reilly etc) for a couple of years as a stop gap until we either find another 2C solution either through trade or wait long enough for development of our prospects internally (Hage, etc). If HuGo feel confident that we are fully out of tanking mode, then this might not be a bad path for us.

The late 20's UFA's (Bennett etc) would tend to command huge contracts and we might still be averse to that at this stage, or it might just be hard to land them without overpaying.

For younger 20's 2C's and prospects the price could be prohibitively high through trade, or there might be uncertainty in their ability to play the position (like with Dach, Newhook).

A team waiting to sign a big UFA in the summer never works.

If KH is banking on this, it will be a huge fail
which I feel he is not

We've been looking for a Caufield for 30 years, it's not that easy.

Drop-off is too much for me on one to the other. It's not an easy no but I ultimately feel I wouldn't.
and a PL

"I'm thinking Bowen Byram," said source. "The Canadiens still don't have a true No. 1 defenseman and Byram could grow with Lane Hutson ."

Yes

He’s not coming to Montreal. Dallas or back to Nashville where he’s going to retire.
He's definitely not going back to Nashville, he felt backstabbed so badly and it was one of the hardest things he's had to endure. While he probably loves Dallas, they have 6 forwards signed past this year and only 27 million in cap space (and Hintz/Marchment/Stankoven to sign the following year). It will be a challenge to fit him.

I read that we were his second team when he signed that contract with Dallas. He'd be an excellent short term addition.

I'd trade Slaf + Calgary 1st for Dobson for sure if he were to be available. Not that I don't think Slaf will ever become good, but just that a top line winger is much less valuable than a legitimate top pair RD. Offer sheeting Dobson is just pure fantasy tbh, Hughes would never commit to such a risk since you'd first have to overpay for Dobson so that Islanders won't match, and even with Dobson (and Demidov) this team could easily still be bottom 10 in the league or even worse if the goalies have a bad season.

Not regularly, no.
Correct, but it's still high odds of achieving something with a player that was practically given for free and for whom we had plenty of cap space and roster space, because we're rebuilding.

I'd love to see Laine establish himself on our top 6, but without a center he can work with, and with nothing to show at 5 vs 5, it seems to be the kind of specialist piece we should turn into another lottery ticket.

I highly recommend you guys check out the Isles board and see their thoughts on Dobson. Maybe he's just been this bad under Patrick Roy but his play is unbelievably concerning.
Feel like we're going to get a Dach for Cozens trade soon.
Cozen's contract is a red flag and he doesn't move the needle for us even if he's better than Dach. Neither player can play center well.
