HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #90: 2024-2025 season part III

...so, opinions; do we go after a Top RD like Dobson first or a Top 6 C??... :dunno:

...cuz Lou likes his Defensive Forwards...could it be in the realm of possibility that we sell him on Evans (extended) + Armia (extended or not) + 1st 2025 (Calgary's or ours; I'd rather Calgary's) + for Dobson??...I'd rather go for a Top 6 C first, but options seem to be limited atm...:dunno:
I want a C
a #1
then suzuki is a #2

A Top 6 C seems more realistic in the short term, but neither seem realistic scenarios for a TDL.

They need both, and maybe a goalie too.

I'd be fine with the 1st, but wouldn't make it conditional. Detroit is getting the players, if they don't make the playoffs it won't be because of Evans and Armia.
I think the conditional 1st is overly optimistic, if anything.

Detroit knows most playoff teams no longer have their 1st pick. Or, their PK is fine. This is probably the best the Habs can hope for.

If they can afford the 1st, the can make it unprotected considering the ask for each is a 2nd. At worse, defer it to 2026 but not to a 2nd and a 3rd.

They *can* make it unprotected, but they won’t if they don’t have to. … which will be the case because they would already have the best offer on the table.

Our top center line production after Suzuki has been a big fail this season even with Evans playing above his head. Neither Dach nor Newhook have earned that role. For me that is a huge problem going into next season. When healthy we can survive another season of Matheson playing RD but not having a 2C for our projected top 4 would be a killer.

Yes. They already have a PP1 D and can fill holes with lesser knowns until the prospects are ready. Balance the ice time.

With a 2C they can’t fill it by committee. They need 200 foot play + point production.

It's a theme for every team who have support contracts about to expire. Contenders who extend support players, don't remain contenders for long imho.
Good perennial contenders don't hesitate to rotate depth players.

If you look at the depth players playing in the cup final for Vegas back in 2018

Tuch
Eakin
Carpenter
PE Bellemarre
Nosek
Carrier
Miller
Sbisa
Hunt

Only William Carrier was still playing for them when they won the cup in 2023 and they had no trouble letting him leave when he wanted to cash in after the cup. I've been saying this for a while we fall in love with depth players too much. They are for the most part interchangeable. Vegas did not hesitate to make some room for Howden, Kolesar and Roy and when they'll ask for too much at the end of the 20ies they'll move on and make room for other kids.

To Detroit:
Evans + Armia

To Habs:
Detroit’s 2025 1st round pick, conditional on making playoffs.
Otherwise 2nd + 3rd rd picks.

Detroit are in a wild card spot. They’re dead last in PK%. Their bottom 6 is bad. (They go hand in hand)

Evans and Joelle would be 5th and 6th among forwards in points on the Wings. Numbers don’t really translate to new teams, BUT, there’s a good chance they could maintain their roles as, ostensibly, 2/3 of a 3rd line / #1PK unit.

Detroit might be looking for a bigger fish (Cozens), so likely a plan B.
A 2nd and a 3rd is not nearly enough for those 2 players.
And it's not an equivalent to a (late) 1st in value. It's more 2 early-ish 2nds.

Arpon Basu talks about that in his latest article.
It says that the 2 players in a package could probably fetch more than a 1st.

I don't think Detroit is the only team that would be interested in the two together.
I'm thinking teams that don't have many right-handed forwards and/or have a bad PK.
Teams like LA, Minnesota, Vegas and NJ.

Pretty good reason to cut Dach loose imho. They should be looking at Duchene seriously for a mentor role. We kinda messed up by not considering it for Monahan, We need a vet who can drag his ass into professional habits, that's just not Dach.

I'm not sure that's Laine either.
It’s not any other player’s responsibility to coach his teammate but I would always want high character players over loafers and the easily dejected. Bergevin’s character stuff was perfectly fine but his problem was he had no idea how to nurture and accommodate talent at the same time (much less draft, develop, trade, or sign talent).

Dach is one of many players I’m totally ambivalent about. I’d like to see him as a 2RW or (ideally) 3RW but his contract is expiring in 2026 and renewing based on unfulfilled potential is risky now that we will be more careful with cap commitments.

I think the likelihood of Dach not being a Hab is higher now than ever before… he’s a good trade piece in a quantity for quality trade.

Rackell from Pitt 2nd pick
Cozens 1st and 2nd
Beriers 1st and 2nd
Couturier 2nd pick
Laughton 2nd pick
Kryou 1st and 3rd

now you guys can rip me on the list

...why the Hades not; nuthin' else goin' on:

Rackell is a winger, not a need...
Fluffabo apparently doesn't want picks...
Francis isn't selling Beniers, especially at a bargain price...
Couts is cooked...
Laughton moves the needle...nowhere...
Kyrou is a Johnny Floaty clone...

...now you can smack me for bitchin' about your list... :biglaugh:

...so who fits the bill that's available??... :dunno:
Don’t know.

If the pro scouts like him, Cozens. Neat and tidy. If not ….

I’d call the Kraken. They have Wright and Beniers as a future top 2 C. And Stephenson as #3.

I’d try to pry away Catton.

Then bridge with ROR or Laughton or even Newhook. Add another C in the draft, then wait on Catton/Hage/Koivu/Draft pick. Stocked cupboard. One will hit.

Rackell from Pitt 2nd pick : not a C
Cozens 1st and 2nd: RH
Beriers 1st and 2nd : sure, but inlikely to be available.
Couturier 2nd pick : done and bad contract
Laughton 2nd pick : not the 2C type
Kryou 1st and 3rd : RH
