As bummed as I am about the current losing streak, it's obvious that it's exposing the weaknesses on the roster and I'm confident HuGo can address it.
I think they have no choice but to sign Evans because it looks to me that Dach isn't a C. He doesn't have enough of a 200 foot game or D awareness. Can he get there? Maybe. But at least he has the hands of a winger with size.
He certainly can't be Laine's C, because he needs a guy who can constantly dish and make up for his D-zone issues. Newhook shouldn't be there either. Basically that line is a mess, and it becomes the principal priority this off-season.
Demidov will work wonders but if they continue to flounder I'm not sure Dach and/ or Laine are on next year's roster.
Newhook should be in the bottom 6, but I'd be be open to dealing him and having a bottom 6 with much more size and toughness.
Florian is not ready yet, but Beck and Tuch both have jam to their Game. Davidson too.
Guess we'll see. My priorities
rebuild 2nd line.
Sign Evans, keep him with Heineken ...find an armia replacement.
4th line with more toughness

I truly shows that Kent has a lot of work to do yet

I may be a bit annoying with this, cause I'm a big fan, but if we want to make a push for the playoffs we should try and get Belzile back.

Pezzetta is not the answer. He's younger but who cares, if we want to win we need to make moves now. Belzile brought us back from our slumber a few years back and now he's having his best season ever in the AHL. We would have him for next to nothing.

If we trade Evans (even for a late 1st and B prospect), that means he is asking for too much on his contract. Think about it.. a late 1st (magic bean) and a prospect that probably does not become as good as Evans. I get that Evans is not a top 6 talent but man, he leaves a big hole if he is gone and trying to replace that when so many other teams are trying the same is just not that easy.

I'm personally 50/50 if we trade him or not. I just feel like Gorton/Hughes are delaying any extension because they want to explore their TDL options first.
Everybody wanted to throw Evans out with the bath water at the start of this season, if we are to be honest. Nobody came remotely close to talking about contract extensions, or suggesting these ridiculous salary amounts to keep him.

Evans has always been a serviceable soldier that helps more than he hurts this team.

He's simply not a core element to fawn over or lament losing, especially if we get an extra first round pick and a 'B' prospect as you suggest.

Personally, I think that we only get a late first rounder and I'm fine with that, unless we end up packaging Beck, a pick and whatever for a genuine long term solution at 2C.

If we don't lose Beck as part of some deal, I believe that Evans is entirely expendable.

The third first round pick, along with our two second round picks and three third round picks becomes valuable trade capital at the 2025 draft. Montreal can likely combine picks to help move up at the draft and increase the odds of drafting an impact player for what may well be the last valuable draft for them.

If not Montreal can always draft a whole lot of early selections and hope to hit a home run along the way.

Or, we could always trade our draft capital to trade for an established 2C, or an established top-4 RHD that can still have an impact with the team for the long term.

I am with you on this.I would add that both his agent and Hughes are awarded that at one point, his S% was at 30% (now at 21%). He can't maintain that statistic. Therefore, i don't think he will ask the moon to re-sign

Belzile is 33 and not a NHL player. We can do better.

I thought Slav was drafted to be a center. I could be wrong but you have to admit the top 2 lines would be deadly
I'd love to see Slaf take the challenge of converting center. He's got the posture of it, the play style. I'm not sure he has the support for it. No offense to Vinny and Marty, but I'm not sure that's a challenge they can tackle without much coaching experience.

I don't think I ever saw anything about Slaf playing C. Maybe you're thinking about Demidov?
Perhaps I was thinking that they were hoping to make him into one. With Caulfield and Zegras on either side of him how can that line not score a ton. Mind you 2 of the 3 would probably back check as well as Laine 😆

I'd rather Cozens than Zegras.
I'd like that also but Caulfield and Zegras already have chemistry

He's probably worked out some plans but you can only move as fast as the season/trading seasons/free agency. Got to wait contracts out too.

Beck, Demidov, and any other forward from Laval already shakes up the top9 combinations. Dach at wing is fine with me, as long as Dvorak is gone, Beck is 4C instead, and we have a true 2-way 2C added. Suzuki needs that second line C to draw higher quality opponents away from the first line.
