I don't know if it's PTSD from lacking star forwards for so long but there's this belief in the MTL fanbase that every loss is either the goalie or the bottom-6 F players not doing good enough. Can't even blame Bergevin for this weird focus on the bottom-6 because it predated him.

There's no doubt our bottom-6 is why we are were we are. But having said that it doesn't mean everything is fine, and it's true that Dvorak and Gallagher are the players where we can see the biggest upgrades. The lack of footspeed for both players hurts, and with Gallagher his conditioning relative to play style hurts his effectiveness immensely. Now some of their defensive responsibilities aren't the type of minutes that you want to give rookies straight away, but all that means is that if you do replace them with rookies like say Beck/Kapanen that there will be a shuffling of responsibilities which isn't a big deal.

I'm content with it. Especially if we stay put this year and chase the playoffs (no changes to the roster). I don't see them blocking anybody and do we need their cap space? Not really because it expires after 2 years.

Dvorak is gone after this year. That frees up a spot for Beck or Kapanen. Does Armia come back? Not sure.

100% correct. It was due to the lack of talent.

A speedier bottom6 would be really impactful to our game, I figure, but I'm not sure we're playoff tough. (not that Dvorak or Gallagher can even keep up in the playoffs).

Anderson and Dvorak play the game at high pace, it is Gally who drags them down.

If we are going to start our run next year then making the playoffs this year is very important. If buying that player is available, HUGO has to pull the trigger.
If this team is good enough to make a run next year, then they can make the playoffs as it is with the current lineup.

If we do not make the playoffs with this lineup, then it would be telling that we are maybe 2 years away rather than 1.

Team chemistry is great so I wouldn't mess around too much. That being said, 1 injury and the team losses it's structure and players have to start playing up.

I'd make two changes. Replace Dvo with another 3rd line center that better fits this teams play. I'd also add a shutdown RHD for depth, if they can't get a top 2 RHD. Savard or Carrier get injured and it's going to be a mess on the backend again.

Add those two players and you'll go a long way in insulating the team from injuries and rewarding the team for how they've come together and give them a better shot at making the post season and possibly a deeper playoff run.

Some people are clearly believing that the Habs either win the cup this June or next or will never see the PO again after that. :sarcasm:
The question reall is if you think Dach will be a Hab in 2027 and do you think he will be a big time contributor and at what cap hit?

Otherwise, you take Malkin until summer 2026.

So happy we have a steady management group for once, after listening to you guys. Giving up guys like Dach and our youth for 38 yold Malkin aint happening. Only way Hughes is gonna add someone that old is via UFA. He wont trade assests for players like Malkin. We all know he doesnt mind trading picks for young players that can help the club long term, and I'm pretty sure that's still the plan.

Would you trade Dach for Malkin?

No. Malkin is not returning a young center like this on a value contract. If we were to make a move like this (and Malkin waives for Montreal), we would use futures and maybe someone like Beck is in the package.

Here is the thing. We signed both Dach and Newhook to perfect bridge deals for a reason. That reason was to allow them to play it out and we see where they are when it's completed. Both are still RFA after the contracts finish.

I have no doubt in my mind that Hughes prefers to evaluate them in this bridge deal. Phone is always open but there is no way Hughe is shopping them.
