Flames pick is currently 19th and I believe the Panthers are 23rd.
Flames pick is 16th, but they have 2-3 games in hand over 17-18-19, if they win one of those game, they go to 19th. Florida is 24th

It would be preferable for the pick that they play around .500 hockey for the rest of the season.

to old to replace NewHook
my thinking

package Newhook up for a bigger fish

True and Newhook is not done growing/developing yet. He's been very good lately

I was going by winning %

If we stay put, what are our holes? It's not bottom 6 depth or bottom 4D depth. It's not goaltending.
Holes are Dvorak, Gallagher being on the team. Anderson and Armia as well but they have been playing well.
Under no circumstances, should we give up 1st rounders for veterans until these guys are in our bottom 6.

Nah, go look at the contending teams and their bottom 6 depth. Most of them have depth worse than ours.

I think we are guilty of targeting guys that are overpaid to play in the bottom 6. But man, if you have the cap space and it doesn't hurt our future, why are targeting and devaluing them? Makes no sense. The Habs bottom 6 depth is how we beat Tampa last night bud.

Gallagher is the most frustrating IMO. The highest anchor contract we have with 2 more years left. But in the role he is playing (and forgetting his cap hit), he's fine.

Dvoark will be gone at least this summer
Gally maintains to drag down that wing when he is out there.
Gally should be 4th line, but the guys on the 4th are better then him

They have a lot of games in hand, if they keep this up we pick around 20, that is if they don’t go on a playoff run. I rather they flirt with 12-15

I’m just hoping they stay in the race so they don’t become sellers at the deadline. If they do that there’s a risk their pick falls into the top 10 and Montreal gets Florida’s pick.

But if they do make the playoffs I can’t see them going on a run and making the Conference Finals. Maybe they win a single round but that wouldn’t change their draft position.

People have to stop putting Demidov at C. He's a W... let him excel there. His play style has nothing to do with his capacity to play C offensively, it's defensively and faceoff that he wont be able to trive. We tried with Drouin... no more.

Based on the search results, here’s a summary of Ivan Demidov’s preferences and abilities at the center position:

Comfortable playing center: Demidov has mentioned that he prefers playing center over wing, citing that it allows him to be more creative and have a better vision of the game. (Source: “Ivan Demidov prefers center to wing - Dose.ca”)

Played center in pre-season tournament: During the Puchkov pre-season tournament, Demidov played center and made highlight-reel plays, showcasing his ability to create scoring chances and dominate games from the middle of the ice. (Source: “September 2024 – After captaining the Russian U23 team, and scoring five points in the Puchkov pre-season tournament, Ivan Demidov officially earned a spot on Roman Rotenberg’s SKA roster in the KHL.”)

Elite creativity and puck skills: Demidov’s scouting reports highlight his exceptional handling, passing, and shooting abilities, which would be valuable assets at the center position. (Source: “2024 Draft Prospect Profile: Ivan Demidov is another top Russian winger - The Cannon”)

Potential to develop into a two-way center: While Demidov’s defensive play could use improvement, his intelligence, passing ability, and engagement off-puck suggest he has the potential to develop into a well-rounded, two-way center. (Source: “2024 Draft Prospect Profile: Ivan Demidov is another top Russian winger - The Cannon”)

In summary, Ivan Demidov has expressed a preference for playing center, has experience playing the position in pre-season tournaments, and possesses elite creativity and puck skills that would be valuable at the center position. With further development, he may become a well-rounded, two-way center.

They are in Montreal's bottom 6, the team's top 5v5 TOI/G forwards are Suzuki, Caufield, Slafkovsky, Newhook, Dach and Laine. They're 6 of 7 at ES, with Evans getting more time.

Montreal shouldn't be trading 1sts for veterans until they're ready to seriously compete, which isn't now.

...at what, taking bad penalties??...being terrible defensively??...we all have had our time with Gally Luv for everything he's sacrificed for the team, but he's cooked...broken...a detriment to the lineup more often than he's not now...

We are being carried mainly by Suzuki, Caufield, Hutson and the goalies.

Only 2 forwards are above 30 pts on the season. So called contending teams have better depth (top 6). Washington has 6 forwards above 30 pts, Florida has 5, Vegas has 5.

I definitely would not say our bottom 6 is good enough to contend either.

He's making mistakes yes. But his line is still one of the better lines in the NHL at limiting goals this year. I would not brush that under the rug because he is not performing to the contract.

I don't know if it's PTSD from lacking star forwards for so long but there's this belief in the MTL fanbase that every loss is either the goalie or the bottom-6 F players not doing good enough. Can't even blame Bergevin for this weird focus on the bottom-6 because it predated him.

There's no doubt our bottom-6 is why we are were we are. But having said that it doesn't mean everything is fine, and it's true that Dvorak and Gallagher are the players where we can see the biggest upgrades. The lack of footspeed for both players hurts, and with Gallagher his conditioning relative to play style hurts his effectiveness immensely. Now some of their defensive responsibilities aren't the type of minutes that you want to give rookies straight away, but all that means is that if you do replace them with rookies like say Beck/Kapanen that there will be a shuffling of responsibilities which isn't a big deal.

The holes right now are too big too fill at a deadline. You'd need to add a strong top 6 player to push Newhook down the lineup and add a top 1st pairing two way RHD. It would not make any sense to pay the big price for those pieces this year.
