I mean depends on expectations. I'd be bringing Kerfoot to replace Dvorak. I wouldn't be gifting him PP time. If he can be a constant threat with his speed and play PK and win faceoffs like he's been doing in Utah, what's wrong? Some envision Newhook taking a Kerfoot esque former role but the former has gotten no reps in this type of role. We don't have winger depth to try it out right now
Kerfoot is just another one of those players that will get scapegoated. He's so much like Newhook, except 30. Skates well, gets a lot of chances relative to point production.

I just don't see it working out well. Even with adjusted expectations, habs fans are nuts.

And I believe he speaks french.
Would cost a lot! I really dont believe Hughes is looking to give our young guns, even Dach. It would be the picks, and its not enough for players like Crosby/Barzal. The plan is to spend when all our bad contracts are up, and thats in two years.

They’re not going to wait until Suzuki is 28.

They have Laine. They have Andy and Gally as depth. Demi is coming. Hutson’s development was fast. Suzuki, CC, Guhle are ready.

They can add a piece and go on a run with this group. Then retool when they lose some expensive pieces in 2027.

Barzal and Crosby would be very different moves. Barzal would be a long term replacement to a current piece like Dach. He’d likely be going the other way.

Crosby would pause Dach’s move to 2C for a couple seasons. They could keep him at a cheap price as a good depth piece until Crosby moves on.

They have the assets. The league doesn’t really have powerhouse teams. Why wait?

I do agree but we got to make the right moves and you can't force them. They are usually circumstantial moves (like Laine) and we got to just be prepared to act when the situation presents itself.

He traded for two guys (Dach, Newhook) who were in a similar situation to Zegras.

Add Laine to this formula. These are circumstantial type trades. We also traded Barron for Carrier. Gorton and Hughes know what they are doing and no, not all trades will be Dach and Newhook types. We are at the end of our rebuild and in transition years now. Hughes is not like Bergevin... he has shown ability to adapt to the current landscape but also not sacrifice our future and his long game remains his top strategy.

And? Everyone loved/loves Dach until everyone shit on him for getting injured. Newhook we will see. Whatever move they make I'll trust judging on the track record. A lot of people shit on the Carrier trade too....yet here we are.
Me personally, I actually liked the Carrier trade at the time. Barron wasn’t going to cut it at the NHL level.

Rasmus Andersson

4 pts in his last 20 games...
Yes he's been slowing down a lot. He's far from being the golden savior some would think.

We're fine with Carrier for now. I think the best acquisition we could do is a Center, pushing Dach to wing, where he can work on his power forward style a little more and not care too much about details.

Barron needed more time to mature. I feel he will be a good NHL defenseman but he will be a late bloomer like Matheson and Petry. Habs could not afford to let him learn on the job while we are trying to move up the standings.

I think we will have more situations like this moving forward in time. Our pool is deep and as they become available on waivers, we either have to have them on our roster or risk loosing them to waivers. In 5-8 years, you will see plenty of our picks have good seasons with other teams.

Crosby is tantalizing, but would cost too much and sidetrack the rebuild, imo.
HuGo know the rebuild isn't linear and while they must love what's happening,
I think they'll be very selective with what they do in March.
I'm not sure they even know yet; will depend on this season.
Can Dach stay healthy?
Can Reinbacher dominate in Laval next year?
Can Mailloux take the next step?

I think they resign Evans and keep all the pending UFAs - except maybe Dvorak.
Or if Savard wants to chase a cup - trade him and then maybe he resigns for a year before retirement.
Slaf/ caufied and Suzuki is an elite 1st line...the pieces are there for the 2nd when Demidov arrives...
But again, can Dach stay heathy or do they move a few high picks and a prospect or 2 for a young, 2C again this summer?

interesting times ahead

Barron only good potential was his offensive skill , which he had none in Montreal.
Dude's a bust or another Nathan Beaulieu in the league

Ehlers will finish that contract with the Jets and see how far they can go in the playoffs. Then he becomes UFA and I'm sure Hughes will consider signing him but the deal has to make sense. If he is looking for $9M+ and a max deal, I don't think we do it.

This might come down to what both Laine and Ehlers want for contract extensions. Getting both guys around $8M(-) AAV probably works but then you got to consider how everything looks. Demidov is coming as well and we also have to sign Evans, Heineman, and Dobes. If Evans walks, I believe they might try Newhook at 3C. If Evans resigns, then maybe Newhook is the one we trade out to make room for Ehlers.

Who's playing 3rd line if Ehlers is added? Do we spread our talent on 3 lines and let Evans walk? I find it a bit challenging to fit Ehlers in the line-up after we already have Demidov coming.
Sounds like somebody is being traded out of our top 6 if we interested in Ehlers. Demidov is sure of a spot next year
