At this point in the rebuild we need quality over quantity. I'd use both our 1st rounders and some expendable assets to move as high up in the draft as possible.
Pitts is dead in the water. I can see Crosby accepting a trade to Habs - just trying to figure out what Pitts would want?
Mtl 1st + CGY 1st + Mailloux + Beck. Something has to sting to make that work, if even for 1.5 years.

what an overpayment for a guy turning 38 this summer...
With Carrier, I don't think Habs need a Pulock.
They need either an upgrade on Carrier (dropping him to the 3rd pair with Xhekaj) with Guhle or an upgrade to Matheson with Hutson.
So your plan is to try to contend for two years (with a suboptimal D and bottom 6) and then rebuild? Because that is what that trade is doing.

Team only has two experienced. KH better find out soon enough.I agree he won't sell out from under them but I doubt he keeps an unsigned Evans.

Pulock is a better Dman than Carrier. If we keep Matheson and get Pulock, Carrier would be on the 3rd line for sure.

Not sure about this statement at this point in time. Just for shits and giggles sake, if we were able to acquire him, it would be very difficult breaking up Guhle and Carrier given how well they've meshed together. I think Pulock would be a nice stabilizer for Arber on the 3rd pairing.

Yup - HuGo are in a leverage position, if teams want the UFAs they need to overpay, otherwise Habs hold onto them as if they were deadline acquisitions …. as simple as that IMO
Habs 2025 1st rounder unprotected - Pens have minimal leverage as Crosby has final say in destination teams.

If Sid ever decides to be traded, he controls is faith with the NMC. Imagine if he says Avs or Habs and that's it? Then, all we need to do is look at the Avs roster and realize what we should offer to beat them. That's how I would see that playing out.
However, if Crosby opens up to 5+ teams, that's different.
His trade value is connected to what teams he opens up to. I bet you the Canucks really did try to move Miller but they ran into roadblocks.

Habs don’t want to trade Evans, but …
The Montreal Canadiens have let Jake Evans know they are interested in keeping him around but that it can’t be a home-run deal. And that’s the rub as far as how this may play out.As of late last week, there had only been preliminary discussions with the pending UFA forward. He’s playing some of the best hockey of his career, and at 28, this is his best shot to cash in. Term is likely going to be the hurdle in this negotiation, I’m not convinced the Canadiens are comfortable going five or six years, and again, Evans is at an age where that security might be important.
Both sides will take a crack at it, but there’s no guarantee it gets done, and despite where the team is at in the standings, depending on trade offers they may have to listen hard if he’s not extended by March 7. He’s making only $1.7 million this season, and cap-challenged contenders find that very appealing. The New Jersey Devils are among the teams that have already kicked tires.
Can he be extended and stay put? Yes. But it’d probably take both sides getting a little uncomfortable with the deal.

I can't believe some of the posts about Matheson. He's playing excellent defense on the right side. MM is going nowhere—for quite a while anyway.
Reinbacher lost a whole year of development. He may not even start in the NHL next year. If he does he'll be broken in slowly. So it'll be two or three years before he becomes our #1 right D and that is still an iffy proposition. Considering how well Hutson and Matheson are playing, I don't see Matheson leaving before those two or three years and that's if he leaves at all. Aside from the great play on the ice Matheson is partly responsible for the harmony in that locker room. I doubt very much HuGo is looking to move MM.

Depends on how many teams he opens up his NMC for and if those teams have cap space. I'm actually pretty sure the Pens and Crosby talked about this potential situation before he signed his current contract. What happens if the Pens go backwards type situation. I could be wrong but I bet you that conversation happened.
Most would say he is open to the Avs and Habs. Who else? No idea. When you look at the Avs roster and cap structure, you do wonder how they fit him in. They would probably want 50% retention or some form of it and that would cost them more.

Matheson is getting some massive disrespect from several Habs fans. I 100% agree.
He's in a great spot now that we have added Hutson. Habs fans need to consider that Matheson is our RD search and it's very possible he wants to stay and we can get him on a value contract until he is 35. 30-35 contracts is not ideal but when you look across the NHL, there is still lots of guys who perform well in those years. Matheson is one of the better puck movers with his skating and I just don't see that fading that quickly. I actually think he is finally in a spot where he is playing with confidence and his maturity will improve, not go backwards.
If we can't get in on a trade to add a legit top 4D, Matheson should stay if he is open to a team friendly deal. Carrier is our stopgap to allow Reinbacher and Mailloux to develop. We have to let them develop the right way.
The penciling in young guys leaning on the job was OK during our rebuild but those days are behind us now.

If that's what it takes, then I say to Crosby you should have picked another team as your childhood favorite. Too rich for my blood. And I think Crosby is one of the top ten players I've seen and I've been watching hockey since the mid-60s.

Imagine if we trade Evans for a pick around 25 (lets say). I know, we are chasing the playoffs but lots can happen from now till deadline. Lets just say we do trade Evans and end up with the 25th pick
Habs pick: 13
Flames pick: 14
Evans return pick: 25
What would 13, 14, 25 get you? 5-8 range? That would be interesting dilemma for teams in that 5-8 range... They would be like, "We are not trading our pick to move back" and then be like "huh, what? You are offering 3 first rounders?"

That's what i mean by F%$/ up our rebuild, no way i am giving up these 4 assets for Crosby.
Crosby as 2 maybe 3 good years left in him.
