HF Habs: Trade Proposal Thread #89: 2024-2025 season part II

Of course we can trade him in a package if we are after a big fish but lets not jump on Newhook as our next target. He's underperforming to his potential yes but it's at $2.9M AAV. Give him a little break and time to figure it out more. He's been moved around on our roster a fair amount.
The way people are let down by Newhook's performance I was sure that he is a 4.0 - 4.5 million guy... Holy crap 2.9? Ok I am failing to see how people can be so disappointed with him then. Sure he is not getting anything valuable done but did he somehow overperform last year or similar and made people's expectations for him higher than what he costs?

Maybe its his unlimited time on second line that does it, i.e. a second line guy is expected to do more. But WHY is Newhook our second line guy? I dont really get why he is given this much time to get things done. We trying to bump up his trade value or what?

It's a bit on the frustrating side with his skill and skating yes. He's on the 2nd line with Dach because they want two puck possession wingers with Laine. Dach is not great on faceoffs as a right hand shot and neither is Newhook but he is left hand shot.

Moving forward... If we trade Evans for a 20-32 1st (lets say), Newhook will have to fill that 3C role for the rest of the season. Then for next year, you can have him with one of Beck or Kapanen and he can provide some center insurance for them. I'm not a fan of calling up Beck and taking him away from a Laval run and a team he played with all season. Let him continue and finish it.

I'm neutral on Newhook. Don't hate or like him at this point. Meh... fills a roster spot and a bridge to Beck, Kapanen, Hage

Ah alright, yea I agree with your rationalization about Newhook. Fills a valuable spot if needed, and most likely will be as per the scenarios you wrote.

I would though definitely switch him with someone on the lower lines. As he seems like a guy whose presence wont have any type of noticeable effect, which should keep the lower lines functional even if we put someone from those to the second line.

Armia is quite similar, very invicible, but at least he should currently have more offense to give to the second line than Newhook. Armia is also a good backchecker, not sure about his possession play? To me he has always felt like a guy who wants to get rid of the puck fast, either by passing or shooting. I have though NOT seen him play the last few years. But to me he felt like a "ready/max reached" type of player already early in his career.

Flames/Panthers 1st, Newhook, and Mailloux gets us Andersson I am sure (might be too much). I'd even include Savard so they can use him for their playoff chase the rest of this season. That's my offer at this TDL but with conditions or permission to talk to Andersson and his agent. We would have to have a handshake agreement that he wants to be in Montreal and what contract he is after.

Good move for the Habs? I think so. If Andersson is OK with a 6 year extension, the Habs would have him age 28/29 on the value contract and then 30-35 on the extension. 6x $7M Is that fair, too much, or too little?

We would have multiple options we can use in our top 4RD and one more year of Matheson will give us some time to evaluate Reinbacher.

Hutson / Matheson
Guhle / Andersson
Xhekaj / Carrier
or
Hutson / Andersson
Guhle / Matheson
Xhekaj / Carrier

Reinbacher stands to replace Matheson but we can monitor it for the entire year next year.

The Habs gave up good picks to acquire a guy who is waiver level

If you don’t care about the Habs that’s fine but don’t feign surprise

Good move for the Habs? I think so
That’s an incredible move for the Habs. Two non-roster assets + Newhook for a 2D. A massive advantage.

One Flames fan on the main boards tried to slide Hage in because he said they are deep on D. I said Hage is not on the table and maybe one of Kapanen or Beck is. I'd keep Kapanen and dangle Beck.

I very much doubt other teams can beat this offer.
* Mid range 1st
* Newhook as a NHL proven piece who is 23 and RFA control after his bridge. Not a cap dump and a piece the Flames can use.
* Prospect.. Mailloux or Beck
* Savard... if trade happens at TDL. Flames can use Savard as a RD while they also chase the playoffs without Andersson

6x$7.5M would be the handshake agreement with Andersson. We need permission to talk to Andersson's agent before we trade for him. If his agent starts talking 8x $8M+, I pass.

Are the Islanders really losing both Barzal and Dobson?
Are they really "for trade".

Barzal has 13 pts in 21 games...50 pts pace for a $9.1m price tag. Outch!
Dobson is mostly fans complaining he's far from his 70 pts season.

So pretty much two underperforming players, fans wants to see moved.
The real problem of the Islanders is how hold the roster is. They are better off going for a real rebuild and since everyone on that roster is over 30 outside of like Barzal, Dobson and Romanov...

Roy will quit on them like he did on the Avs. Very much doubt he is interested in a rebuild and I doubt Lou wants to do that as well. They would need to clean house if they want to do a rebuild. Would have to be owner driven.

Islanders have lacked offensive goal power for a while now. Their fans would be drooling over EP40 right now.

Their will be changes if they can't make the playoffs.

Ok Im starting to understand why people are so disappointed (and irritated to say the least) with Newhook. It also sonewhat explains why Habs are not willing to give up good pieces or picks in trades so easily anymore (Ive understood there have been a couple other similar trades as well)

Maybe thats why we paid so little for Laine though. Its the Butterfly-effect (not really but you get what I mean).

No progression

Not using his speed.

Brings nothing else and it's evident.

I think the Habs got him and hoped he'd be a 20, 25 guy with speed and they could take him with a year, or two left and add to him and trade him for an improvement, but that isn't happen.

Utah probably sticks with him, but trading Newhook for Crouse might be one of many things they look for.

Though, looking at this team, I think the Habs want another Anderson, but who can score more consistently. A big, fast, physical forward. Some of the hardest to find.

That package may get you one of Barzal or Dobson (depending on what Gallagher or Anderson are worth), but its definitely not getting both.
So Reinbacher, Mailloux, Dach, Newhook, Roy, 1st gets you Barzal. I think you obverrate Barzal a bit. I'.d rather keep rebuilding will be more effective than a 28 years old Barzal for the whole farm system.

Yes but more like hockey trades. If they rebuild, I will be surprised
Hockey trades aren't really an option when half your roster is over 30 and/or have no trade clauses of some kind.

There is 6 players with full no trade clause, 1 with a full no move, 1 with a 22 teams list and 5 with 15-16 teams list on that Islanders roster.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Lou was trying to extend Palmieri and Nelson at this point.

I'd be really surprised if Miller or EP are moved by the deadline. There may be a rift but 9/10 times those trades get done after the season is over.

Too much money and term involved to try to do cap gymnastics with in the middle of the year.
