Newhook's best season is 34 points in 55 games. Just last season.
Dach's best season is 38 points in 58 games. Two seasons ago.

Why do people act like one is more likely to come out of this funk than the other?

Yes, Dach is coming off an injury, but they said he was healed and was ready to go at the end of last season. Maybe he never recovers.
Because Dach’s injury is typically not overcome within a few months and there’s a decent chance he may still end up as a 2C, something I very much doubt Newhook is suited for or will do.

Because Dach is big.

There's always deals to be made regardless of the situation. Hughes seems like the guy who wants to do things in a different way. Anything can be explored.

Well of course, but if your main strategy is to trade Evans for an UFA upgrade, you are very likely to be disappointed.

Evans is playing himself into a substantial raise. I'd rather spend the increase he will demand on a legit top 6 centre. My hope is he push Dach down to 3rd line and Beck jumps into 4th line role next year.

We have a great cap, but we need to be aware of what's to come with Laine, Lane and eventually Demi needing raises.

I really like Evans but I'd set a ceiling of like 3.5 x 4. He probably wants more.
It's according to what we can get for Evans and how much money he wants? If we can get a Fleischmann type return. It's been great knowing ya, but Evans you be going.

Sometimes grinders have some puck luck…
Big mistake to pay them or believe they are actual top 6 tho.

Two reasons, first Dach has more/better tools. For both players it's a question of can they put things together, but the simple answer is if both do put it together what Dach has put together is better/more valuable then what Newhook has done. Second the injury excuse, Dach's production was pre-injury, but Newhook's was post injury. It's a lot easier to write off Dach's poor play as it just taking a long time to recover from a bad injury, with Newhook the injury wasn't as bad, and he already showed he recovered so his current play isn't injury related.

That's generally true, every year on the Habs there's a player like Rafael Harvey Pinard that this forum assumes will be a long term success on the third line.

But Evans has been showing it for a while. Since the quarantine playoffs in my opinion. I think he's a high IQ player but in a relatively less athletic body than his peers. So he's proven as kind of a luxury 4th liner. But honestly I'm not sure how luxurious.

KH wont make a deal until trade deadline
If there is a deal to make the team better this season and years to come, he will make it just like he did with Carrier.

Personally, I think he has a lot of work coming out of the Chritsmas break!!

Improve the back up situation
Trade Savard and maybe Matheson if the return is good
Trade Armia and Dvorak
Decision on Evans
Find a legit top 6 center
Another top 4D

I doubt he waits to try and do everything at the deadline to be honest

Some Oilers fans saying according to one of their insiders, Oilers could be interested in Matheson

Found the tweet they were referring to and sounds like it's just insiders opinion.....but wonder what we would want from EDM?

Been saying Evans would look fantastic there. He fits like a glove IF we decide to trade him. So maybe package deal of Evans+Matheson? But for what??

Oilers will not have the cap space for Evans+Matheson and their only UFA with enough $ to make it work is Skinner (the forward, not the goalie  ). Or throwing in two forwards making $1m which doesn't make much sense since Habs are full at forwards.

He's always made deals ahead of the TDL.

In 2022, Toffoli was a month before and Chiarot 5 days before.
In 2023, Dadonov was 5 days before.
In 2024, Monahan was a month before.

I wouldn't be surprised in a goalie trade in January and a selling trade (Evans or Armia) in February. Last 2-3 deals (Armia/Evans, Dvorak, Savard) on March 6-8th.

His plate is full for sure what happens with Evans is the key to everything.
For me we are still rebuilding move out everything you can and find some inexpensive plug ins.
Get us as many bullets as possible to address the very obvious weaknesses in the off season.

If the Habs want to acquire an elite player, in a sort of Eichel-type trade, they have the following pieces available.

Gold coins
2025 1st
Calgary 1st
Michael Hage

Silver coins
2026 1st
Kirby Dach
Alex Newhook
Owen Beck
Joshua Roy
Sam Montembeault
Can Fowler
Engstrom
Cap space

Bronze coins
Mesar
Tuch
Struble
Lots and lots of 2nds and 3rds.
Etc

I assume that Suzuki, Caulfield, Laine, Slafkovsky, Demidov, Reinbacher, Guhle, Hutson, Xhekaj are not being traded, but then again I used to think that about Romanov.
