I'm sure Kent could squeeze a 2nd out of him.
It's not David he needs to squeeze. It's the negotiating GM.

Savard is minimum a cond 2nd round pick. RHD with experience who won the cup. He looks bad because he is used too much against too strong competition but on a stacked team's 3rd pairing he would be fine. Teams value this kind of player a lot for a cup run. We paid a cond 3rd round pick for Dwight King who was a struggling 4th line winger.
Yeah but Bergevin isn't managing any team at the moment.

I have a strange feeling in my legs. Does that mean anything? Gangrene, paralysis, Parkinson's, a blockbuster trade?
I'd investigate high blood pressure.

I would've re-signed Savard but he's been so bad this year it's not worth it
You can still do it July 1st, the question isn't if we're re-signing Savard & Evans, it's more if they're worth enough to trade.

what's a fair deal for him?
It's about the term length more than the money or AAV. If I look at contracts given last July 1st there were several spent on support guys for 5-7 years. Matt Roy for instance got a 6 years deal and he's basically playing #5-4 minutes. I don't know if it's because of the rumors the owner will want to limit contract length to 5 years in the next CBA, but it's very possible. Engvall in NY is another example, at a 7 years length for basic plumbing.

So it may be more advantageous for Jake to wait until he can access the market and get a long term deal, than sign higher for shorter with the Habs.

I'm not sure KH wants to have Jake for a long term either.

They should sign him now 3x3, getting a 2nd back for him does nothing, and he isn't worth a 1st
If a 2nd is the best you can get on the market for him, you keep him and try to sign him until he hits the market. Odds are that Dvorak is gone too and with no 2C, you cant go into the end of the season with only Suzuki at C.

I dont move him unless I get offer a guy with 2C potential.

I'd get that 2nd no issues. Evans is replaceable worst case scenario.

I have a strange feeling that we won’t trade Savard and trade Matheson instead
Savard is as good as gone. Slowing down, older and expiring contract. Really no future for him on the Habs now that Carrier is here.

I’d be very surprised to see Matheson get traded unless it’s for a massive upgrade. Habs wanted to add vets, which they did with Carrier, so to trade a vet with another year on his contract would be a shock.

Evans is not replaceable. He's a solid bottom 6 C that gives his all, adds some secondary scoring, is effective on the PK and brings it up a gear during the playoffs. Anyone who says he is replaceable needs to respect the value of quality bottom 6 players.

If we let Evans walk we have to replace our 2, 3, and 4Cs next year

Unless the plan is to be worse than this year
And we have Beck & Kapanen who didn't necessarily look out of place on NHL ice. We can also sign or trade for a 3,4C with ease, Evans will still be available, so we can make an offer. Also we can downgrade Kirby to 3C, look for a 2C instead. We have enough draft capital for it.

Does Davidson play center in Laval? Sometimes?

He is, there are lots of Evans across the league, like there were several Carriers available as well.

Edit: I'd try signing Sturm from SJ, very good on face-offs.

I wouldn't be opposed to paying Evans more over a short-term deal, I feel like we need to bridge in a guys like Beck/Kapanen and having Evans there would better insulate an already weak organizational depth at C.

Not a chance. Teams hold on to players like Evans or trade them to contenders when they are tearing it down for a rebuild for a premium. You trade away Evans, and you create a huge hole in this lineup. You don't appreciate what you have in Evans.

Evans is 5th on our team in scoring and over .5 PPG, career year for him and not as easily replaced as you are making it seem

He is very replaceable, there are lots of .5 PPG guys out there, Eller and Desharnais were examples.

In any case you shall see at the TDL. I don't think Evans' contract is anywhere critical for this management.

Edit: It's even possible they acquire a vet C before the TDL eh...

Evans is awesome, and I would gladly give him a 5 year deal. Dude is getting better. He is very much a 3C now.

Lars Eller won a cup playing a key role on his team. Yeah, those guys grow on trees.
