Slaf doesn't know how to use his size advantage -- he turns his body awkwardly when fighting for pucks such that even smaller players can get around him.

This part of the game can be taught. Slaf needs a mentor.

It's probably the main thing that irritates me about his game. He doesn't have the natural reflex of gaining leverage going into battles.

Yes it can be taught, but...at first OV, I want guys who do that naturally.

I still think he will become a really good player. But knowing how to use his body will make the difference between him just being a top 6 guy vs a line driver.

But he was actually doing it very well last season during his great 2nd half of season.

So again, is Kovacevic really the shit down top RHD the Habs need to anchor their D? The answer is f*** no, and that’s what they need.

Why spend all this time and energy lining over a non event player? They need a top end RHD to anchor their D, not Jonathan f***ing Kovacevic. Think bigger.
Numbers, eyes test, New Jersey fans and management disagree with you.

Kovacevic would be our #3 dmen most games.

I would love to get him, but Sens would never and Tkachuk is not a center btw

I always thought he was winger until I saw him play center and I was shocked.

But they still would’ve lost the game. 8-2 instead of 9-2?

MIGHT be better then existing options but wouldn’t change the trasjectoey of the team.

Rather than obsessing over bottom line players, why not focus on adding top tier players who can make a difference to the outcomes of games? Kovy isn’t that guy.

Depth is damn imporant though. Our SFC run was down to Price, Weber and a lot of our depth.

Numbers, eye test, fans and NJ management don’t make Kovy the top end shit down D Montreal actually need. And he would not be a top 3 D in Montreal. He’s not better than Matheson, Hutson, Guhle, Savard or Xhekaj. In fact I’d take Struble over him as well. The only D I’d say he’s clearly better than is Barron who is younger and less experienced than Kovy, so we’ll see in a few years if that still holds. No matter how you cut it, he’s certainly not the answer Montreal is looking for.

Depth is fine when you have the top end talent to support. Depth means nothing when you don’t have the anchors like Weber or Price carrying the load. Without them, depth is meaningless. It’s just more important players who can’t get the job done.

Edmundson, Petry, Chiarot on a team without Weber would be mid as they’ve all shown on teams without playing with a Weber level player.

Have as many depth goalies you want on a team but if they’re not playing behind Price, all you have is too many bad goalies.

Kovacevic is New Jersey’s top 4 dmen. He’s 1st on PK ice time and the guy on the ice when winning and the other team has removed its goaltender.
But he isn’t in our top 4.
This makes complete sense since New Jersey is 5th overall in the standing and we are 29th🤣
Yep! Makes sense!

Habs probably have more talented d than NJ but they are still learning. It may be that Sieganthaler is making Kovacevic look better than he is. He is a solid d but nothing that isn't replaceable.

So which of Montreals top 5 of Matheson, Guhle, Hutson Xhekaj and Savard would you trade for Kovy? Waiting so I can have a good laugh at your expense…

I wouldn’t trade Kovacevic has he is already on my team. A top 4 dmen picked up on waivers doesn’t happen often.

I would have traded Matheson at the latest at last years trade deadline.

Hutson Savard
Ghule Kovacevic
Xhekaj Baron
Struble

You figure out what you can get from these guys minus Savard who you trade at the deadline this year.

We played over 15 games with 1 RHD and 5 LHD.
Stupidity!

Go look what New Jersey fans think of him.
Solid is good enough not to trade him and we have not replaced him, we are playing 5LHD most games.

Kova play in NJ is showing he was a better D than Hab fans gave him credit for.

Glad he is doing well, and escaped the shit show in MTL. For sure he would have helped.

MTLs D is a joke. Outside of Guhle and Hutson they have a lot of quantity but the quality isn’t that good.

Barron - junk
Struble - a 5/6/7 at best.
Wifi - a 5/6 at best
Savard - a 5/6
Math - should be used as a 4 but is an #1/2 on this mediocre squad.
Lane - is a 3/4 but is being overused
Guhle - is a 3/4 - might be a 1/2 someday

No no. You seem really confident in your post. So answer honestly, which of Matheson, Hutson, Guhle, Savard or Xhekaj would trade for Kovy 1 for 1 right now? He’s easily a top 4 so trading any of the Hans top 5 should be an easy choice for an educated hockey connoisseur such as yourself.

What you ask me doesn’t make sense.
If I have him on my team, why would I trade him away to trade him again for one of my players.

That’s not how it worked if we are trying to build a contender here. A hockey connoisseur knows that.

I’m asking you as of today, Kovy is a devil and you think he’s the bees knees and would make a material difference to the Habs success. Which existing player on the current Habs roster would you trade for Kovy that would solidify the Habs defence and make them a better team? It’s a really basic question. If you can’t answer it I just say so.

I’d easily trade Struble or Barron all day long. Savard as well, lost two steps.

I told you it doesn’t work like this.
It’s not necessarily about being better now, but better in the future as some of our players are only 21 years old.

Put some thought into it.

I'm not opposed to us trading for another veteran player. Everyone seems to have a chair, so probably no room. I don't think that would hurt if you get a somewhat useful player that can help anchor this team a bit, when needed.
