I feel like it's a forgone conclusion that management is going to go after a 2C with experience this summer. Unless Dach has a miraculous turn around then I doubt they have faith anyone currently in the system can fill the 2C spot next season, and I'd expect there's going to be some real pressure on management's jobs if we don't see significant improvement next season.

Depending how Malkin finishes out the season, I could see him being a realistic target. I'd like to think Pittsburg isn't stupid enough to think they can be competitive next year, and probably head into their rebuild this trade deadline or off season. He'll have one year left on his deal so he'd help buy time for Hage/our 1st pick this year, he'd add some much needed veteran presence at center and I honestly think having a Russian vet to help Demidov transition to North America would be such a simple and smart move.

It would be nice, not sure we could pay the premium that Pittsburgh might want for him. If their asking price is a 1st then it makes no sense from our end.

Glad we didn't get Jiricek. Seems to have some attitude for an unaccomplished player and I'd bet on David Savard over Jiricek in a footrace. He's soooo overrated because of his draft pedigree.

This is not accurate.
They gave the 2025 MIN 1st a value of 13OA because that's what they got last draft.
That pick will likely be around 25OA.

We don't really have a NHL defense core either. Dobes might get the same amount of troubles.

We know Primeau can’t do it. Why not give Dobes a try?

Defence hasn’t been great but a half decent goalie would keep his team in the game at least. Primeau sporting a .821 SV% just isn’t tenable.

which is why they should be swapping Primeau for Dobes and making a trade for a RD and a C at the same time.

Swap the Gs
Trade Barron + Picks for a decent C
Acquire a defensive RD from the surplus of assets
=
stabilize the team without accelerating too fast and they can trade Savard later if needed when the TDL comes

I mean, that’s not remotely the return on which he settled — why would the price be so much more for the Habs?

There is a tendency for teams to ask for more when trading within the conference. It wouldn't haven been to the extreme that the other poster said, but there's very likely some sort of premium we would have to pay, maybe turning the 3rd and 4th picks into another 2nd. We also don't know how high they are on Hunt, he might very well be a guy they like and would much prefer over say a Barron who we would argue is probably equivalent but who knows what CLB thinks of.

That’s a big gap between “they’ll ask for more from within the conference” to “they’ll ask for Demidov”

Barron (as a trade asset) is worthless so it is likely they’d have asked for someone we didn’t want to lose + picks. That’s trading.

No harm in missing a trade or two, we can be in on all of them but can’t expect to finish all of them. Jiricek doesn’t fit very well with our immediate needs.

So, how many of the posters on here complaining about not beating Minnesota's offer for Jiricek are also complaining about what the Habs gave up for Dach and Newhook and their current performance? This would have been another acquisition of that type - - a young, former first round draft pick whose original team has soured on, for a 1st round pick +. In this case, though, the Habs have someone in management down in Laval with direct experience with the player.

Top draft picks who struggle could eventually be traded......Seguin Drouin Strome Tippett Glass Byram Dach and Seth Jones to name a few.....and currently Byfield and Cozens are under achieving.

If we want to start competing now and maybe start trying for the post season by next year anyway, Jiricek is not the guy to spend assets on. Reinbacher is going to need time , so trade or UFA signing are our only ways to get a RHD that will help us start to compete now. And the 2C

Would much rather Dobes stay in Laval. Leave him alone and let him cook. MTL will destroy him if we call him up

I love how CGY developed Wolf. Left him in the A for 2 full seasons before he started seeing some action.

Is it really schizophrenic to dislike bad moves and want good moves? (note I didn't want Jiricek at that price but I don't understand the constant instinct to punch at other fans for wanting something better than what feels like the most boring losing team of all time year after year)

And Hunt had value as a trade asset? They no doubt wanted a young D who was NHL ready even if that D doesn't have big upside. They took Hunt, our equivalent to that is Barron.

But yes I agree that Jiricek although interesting probably doesn't provide any immediate help, and given we already have a couple RD with offensive upside but defensive issues, it's kind of meh. Long term it very well might be worth it to make the trade but you have to be really sure about Jiricek turning things around because that CGY pick likely will have just as much upside as Jiricek.
