Same here. Unless they weren't high on Jiricek, this seems like a pretty low cost for a RHD picked that high not too long ago.
My guess is that they aren't keen on trading for prospects/project players given how Newhook and Dach aren't working out. If people think Jiricek stinks and is value has drastically fallen off, I have to wonder what they think of Mailloux and Reinbacher.

When they’re our prospects you have to be patient because they’re future Conn Smythe winners. When they’re another team’s prospects they’re worthless junkyard dogs.

If Jiricek develops into a strong RD, top pair or leading a 2nd pair, the organization will deserve due criticism.

With the draft & prospect capital we have, passing on that better mean they got some red flags right

That's a silly take.

Being patient with assets on hand & not paying a premium for someone else's "maybe" are two completely separate assessment contexts. Makes no sense to muddle them.

I don't think it's crazy to think that Dobson could become available in the offseason. He's having a terrible year, the Isles aren't going anywhere, and I'm not sure Lou keeps his job.

Mailloux + Roy ?
Why was Mailloux regularly being fake-traded with Jiricek? Is Jiricek that much better?

Plus, comments about Jiricek’s IQ, how he is slow to process the game and how he is not very coachable, give pause. Mailloux has toed the line and has done everything the org has asked of him, without complaining. Better the devil you know. 💀

Why did Nashville trade Askarov again? :shakehead

I think it had more to do with Askarov no longer wanted to be in Nashville. With them having Saros locked up long term, he probably felt he can't be the gu there. In San Jose, even if they do send him to the AHL, he's still their guy.

Man, San Jose may have a #1 goalie in Askarov. A #1 D in Dickinson and they definitely have a #1 C in Celebrini.

Hopefully Grier properly surrounds them and not pull a Bergevin who had Max, PK & Carey and didn't do much to properly surround them.

Jiricek has higher draft pedigree, he haven't been better than Mailloux at the AHL level. There is about 8 months age difference between the two as well.

If the Habs didn’t have Mailloux, then chasing Jiricek might have made sense. But, given that both players may end up with similar profiles, not worth expending draft capital.

If that's the case you jump on that and make a deal. Dobson is exactly what this team needs. Trading him would be a massive mistake.

Habs needed Askarov

Yeah, he would have been a good target and someone who filled an organization need. It kind of irks me that management has many assets and some players (Jiricek and Askarov) who fill clear needs are being dealt for deals they could have matched. Hope their pro scouting/decision making is right and that I'm overrating those two.

I agree with those saying to wait and cash our assets on a better player than Jiricek. I look around the league and can’t help but feel like many teams are/could be in need of a re-set or a retool, if not an outright rebuild after the upcoming season.

I'm on the should have trades for Jiricek, but at the same time something about him says he won't be anywhere close to the hype, but still an NHLer.

Basically

5th round pick for Hunt

Jiricek for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Basically Wilds gave up a year of draft picks for Jiricek.

Hughes:
1) Loves Reinbacher
2) Has Pascal Vincent in his organization and he can’t ask for a better inside track on a player than the player’s most recent former coach (though the analysis could be faulty)
3) Likely didn’t think the fit was right. Adding a defender who needs stability to this d-corps is basically setting him up to fail.

We have the assets to acquire anyone available but the trajectory of the Habs and the timing of the trade have to be right for all three parties.
Agreed. The only thing that would have made sense for us was Mailloux 1 vs 1.

My guess on how the habs view of acquiring Jiricek

- They weren't that high on him
- They weren't willing to give up a high pick for Jiricek, and the flames pick could end up being around 10th. They also weren't willing to give up a top prospect (Mailloux, Hage, etc.).
- They know Reinbacher and Mailloux will be fighting for a lineup spot in about a year, so they didn't feel like it made sense to add a 3rd RD prospect who has a similar timeline

Byfield should be a target.
Yes Byfield is a young center target others.....Cozens Norris Frost Bourque Ritchie Svechkov Lambert Rossi Dvorsky Savoie Wright and Connor Geekie......Montreal for sure needs a future top center either draft them or you have try what they did with Dach.

It has nothing to do with Dach and Newhook who I am sure they are expecting to become valuable players. It has to do with what they think of Jiricek and what the asking price is. No chance they would give up what the Wild did. Both their firsts will likely be much higher than the Wild's.
