Trade Proposal
  • To Winnipeg: Brock Nelson ($3M cap hit, 50% retained), Kyle Palmieri ($2.5M cap hit, 50% retained)
  • To NY Islanders: Brad Lambert, Colby Barlow, 2025 first-round pick
Why It Works
For the Jets, Nelson slots in as a 2C upgrade, potentially forming a lethal line with Vilardi and Perfetti, while Palmieri adds versatility and playoff tenacity—think a line with Ehlers and Namestnikov. Their top-nine depth becomes a nightmare for opponents, and the $5.5 million cap hit preserves flexibility. For the Islanders, Lambert and Barlow offer high-ceiling forward prospects (one near NHL-ready, one developing), and the first-rounder replenishes draft capital. It’s a haul comparable to the Bo Horvat trade (a first-rounder, Anthony Beauvillier, and Aatu Raty), adjusted for Palmieri’s inclusion and retention.
trade list, though Winnipeg’s competitiveness might appeal. If the Jets push for a cheaper deal, the Isles could swap Barlow for a lesser prospect like Rutger McGroarty, but the 50% retention justifies a premium return.
This trade would kickstart a youth movement for the Islanders while giving the Jets a legitimate shot at the Cup—two birds, one well-crafted stone.

Flame away

Winnipeg would atleast like you to use lube first and I’m an Islanders fan. Remove Lambert and add in a mid round pick if we’re really trying to make a deal happen. Even then, I can’t see Winnipeg being interested in both. Barlow and a 1st for Brock has been discussed though.

I was like Brock Nelson okay a C.

Depth forward Kyle Palmieri sounds good.

I was like okay a 1st is reasonable.
Then I saw 2 names I assumed prospects.

You didn't just ask for 1 but both of there top 2 prospects.

Id put Lous number on ignore after this offer.

Although this proposal is obviously too much, I think the Jets will end up with Nelson somehow as it seems like a guy they'd want.

So, out of the top 100 drafted NHL prospects based on Wheeler’s latest (and most comprehensive) list:
  • Rutger McGroarty: 36th
  • Brad Lambert: 39th
  • Colby Barlow: 53rd

Lambert seems like a lock for the NHL . He is middle six winger most likely. Barlow is good, less of a lock.

How many times are you in a position to win a cup?

Prospects are nice. Will the best goalie in the world still be the best when these prospects are ready to contribute?

Lou will probably get a 1st and decent prospect for Nelson. He probably gets a second for Palmeri. Both without retention.

How many teams, with top prospects, have recently won the cup?

you left out that we could still go after nelson but without the extreme overpay... like nobody is saying the jets couldn't use nelson...

Okay , so what would you offer for Nelson. Keep in mind your 1st round pick will be a late pick.

Misc you are certaintly entitled to your opinion but what do you think Lou will get for Nelson and Palmeri separately with and without retention?

I'd be impressed if Pittsburg let Winnipeg trade Rutger McGroarty a second time, especially off another club's roster this go-round.

But Dubas does have an outside the box style so might as well ask.

1st and a prospect for Brock, if its with retention a better quality prospect as a star. Palm's (if he want's to go anywhere that isn't NJ) a 2nd or 3rd and some type of filler (possibly a mediocre prospect if its with retention) if the team needs to move a body due to the roster restrictions. No cap dumps in return unless returning cap dump is an expiring contract in July. Brock I think has been playing stressed out due to all the rumors and Palmieri seems to be in a slump again but manages to break out of it usually later in the year.

Just offer Dubas a former Greyhound and he'll say yes.

How many teams have recently traded a 1st + good prospect for a pending UFA and won the Cup that year?
