Trade deadline talk 2024-25 (12 PM PT, 03/07)

Im confused too. Why pay for Stephenson and Montour if your are going the long term rebuild approach.

I know ownership is worried about the optics if we just blatantly tanked for a season or so but we're doing this half in/half out approach and suck anyway.

To avoid becoming a rudderless mess like the Sabres? I talked about this the other day that one of the positives of those UFA signings, odd as they were, is that they will be here for the kids if/when management sell of the vets that do have trade value.

Another thing to add here is that both 2026 and 2027 1st round picks are top-10 protected.

Yeah.
We'll just take the 11th pick in 2026 and 2027. :sarcasm:

Overall great trade and only retaining on Gourde is fantastic.
Helps us create more cap space and also helps retain that retention spot for next season.

Here's the complete trade.

That’s a hell of a haul. I’m a fan of this trade even though it means moving my favorite player to a team I dislike. Bjorkstrand getting a cup would be an amazing bonus.
Actually was shocked to see Bjorkster go to...Gourde I could see cause he's a playoff dynamo...great get for the Kraken and GMFrancis even though it'll be low 1st rounders and 2nd rounder makes up for the draft pick lost to the NYR? And like someone said earlier it clears the path for some youngsters when and if they are ready!!!

I wouldn't go after eigher one of those.

The Kraken aren't one player away and should focus on building around the younger guys.

Also going big in free agency is a stupid way of trying to build a team in this league.
Agreed but if they do decide to go that route that’s what I would prefer. Hoping this opens up spots for our kids to get some experience

What’s Bjorkstrand like? I saw him very little, but seemed determined and feisty.

I think you’ll enjoy Eyssimonts forecheck and speed; he loves his wraparounds.

We're kind of rudderless right now though? I don't mind either plan if they actually stick to it.

You'll love Bjorky. Great player. He can skate, he forechecks, dig for pucks, has a nice shot and plays 200 honest ft. Tampa has a great eye for good pro players.

Bjorkstrand's a very good two way forward that scores and works well playing with guys like Gourde.
I think he fits very well with what Tampa's doing and he's easily a 20+ goal scorer on a team like that.

I wouldn't call him that feisty(like basically our whole team) but he certainly is determined.

BTW: He's also able to step it up during the playoffs and in big games as you've experienced yourself in 2019.
He also scored all three game 7 gaols(2x against Colorado and 1x against Dallas) the Kraken scored during their 2022 playoff run.

Here's another wrinkle to it.

If the 1st round picks are in the top ten they slide back another year.
If that happens we'll actually receive another 3rd round pick on top.

I think, all things considered, this is a smokin' deal for us. Gourde's obviously on an expiring deal, no guarantee TB can resign him to what will be likely be his last contract, could be a pricey rental even though Bolts are paying $0.25 on the dollar (unlikely thought, TB has a very savvy front office). I'll miss his intangibles, but Ronnie was shrewd capturing the value he did in this trade. If this is his swan song, I thank him for his service and wish him well. We have the bones and assets to build a competitor and he had a fair shot, plus he's not leaving a disaster in his wake. This deal is, at very worst, a A- for us.

Honestly that's more than I expected for either player individually, even if the picks are likely going to be #21 or lower? When I first saw TBL was the trade partner I was honestly hoping Francis might have pried away one of their sweet prospects, like Geekie. Alas...I'll have to settle for this.

Also, the fact that he only got futures means we might get to see someone like Winterton come up and get an actual look.

Eyssimont is one of the best energy guys/ pests in the league when he's going. He toned it down this season compared to last, but when he is on his game he is one of the most noticeable players night in and night out. Nonstop motor, annoying to play against, not afraid to take the puck to the net. Seattle will love him I think.

The Tanev replacement right here.

I actually didn't realize he was the only one who scored in those games.

He already had a clutch tag before Seattle, going back at least as far as his 2016 Calder Cup MVP when he scored the winning goal.

Man I hope Francis keeps rolling with this? Tanev next? Maybe Schultz? Oleksiak?

Yep, Kakko trade, now this... keep on going on when you are on a roll. Burakovksy to some desperate GM would be nice. Might be doable now with the extra ammo to round out a trade.

Do you mean Schwartz?

I see Tanev being moved and maybe Oleksiak but outside of that, not sure if we move anyone else. If Oleksiak gets moved though, I wonder if the ownership will try to throw money at Rantanen or Marner (if they are not re-signed) before FA.

I don't know if they will "sit" on all that available cap space.

Why would they spend an enormous amount of money on a top UFA that will be declining just when the team wants to go deep in the playoffs? You don't drop such a costly player to the third line. Moreover, he'll block the young up and coming guys from a spot on the top line and/or the PP and screw with their development. Such a dominant player will inevitably have an impact on the style the team plays, the young guys will take after him for better and worse.

The sane move is to add an expensive UFA when you know what your core for the cup contention is, not before. That is, years down the line. Stephenson and Montour are expensive, but not so expensive their decline cannot be overcome. In that sense they will not be major issues in the future, which a seriously expensive UFA contract very easily could become.
