Trade deadline talk 2024-25 (12 PM PT, 03/07)

Is it wrong that I won’t really miss either player? That playoff run seems like a million years ago, so getting picks for declining production is a good thing.
I’m curious if that’s it for the Kraken. It’s already been a more active TDL than usual for Francis, so what does this mean for the offseason?
I think Tanev goes. I saw somewhere he told the team he wants to go as well.

No it's not. But I am "peculiar" in the sense that I just care about making the team better. We could trade Beniers for a better player, and I would not be upset. Wright and Catton would bother me, but again if the team is better, I wouldn't be that upset.

They can use those pics for trades as well… Really set them up for the opportunity to make some moves. The team needed to reset, even though my son will be crushed as BjorkStrand was his favorite player 🥲

I just don’t know how you could turn down that offer as it’s a two 1s a seconds and a decent player

Yeah, the absurd emotional attachment some (especially on the Kraken FB page) always seemed strange to me. I want to cheer for a winning team, period.

I really like this one cause it might actually give this whole thing a chance for some direction.
Even if it means not being competitive next year or the year after.

BTW: I'm very critical of Ron but I gotta give it to him.
That one was good, just like the Kakko trade.

I think he should keep on doing trades and extending those players instead of gong mad in free agency.

Better off not getting anyone at free agency and push the players they drafted into a chance to compete. Now wonder who's going to pay the most for Tanev?

Yeah direction is the operative word here. The current team was going nowhere fast as I said before. Two years of nothingness and it was clear that the room was not in the greatest place. Not that I think there was bad blood between the players or anything like that, just the futility must have been grating, especially for the good "elderly" players that still have some fight left in them.

Some day for Seattle sports. These trades, Tyler Lockett cut, DK requesting a trade. Just need the mariners to trade a stud pitcher/Julio to complete the trifecta.

Gourde has been out for some time and was in decline over the last couple of years.
If we don't retain anything on Bjorkstrand that cap hit will make him less valuable.

Overall I'm curious to see what will happen but do like that Francis(the team seem to be willing to make more changes than just trading off UFA's.

Shhhhhh! Don’t tell the universe.

I am expecting Oleksiak gets moved too. And moving Bjorkstrand without cap retention, as per what the trade looks like right now, helps us next season. Whether that is taking on bad contract or something else.

That scares me. We are so far from the cap. It's easy to imagine our FO thinking this is clearing the space for free agency. I'd have preferred if we retained for an extra pick!

Not wrong but I think it's normal to like your players and miss them. Especially if they're good - and Gourde was still okay and Bjorkstrand was even this year at times our best forward. I'll miss them. Twenty years from now I'll miss them. The folks who missed Grubauer though :laugh::laugh:

Since we didn't retain on Bjorky, and the cap jumping up so much next year, you can tell our FO is thinking bad thoughts about what to do with all that cap space. Very naughty bad thoughts.

As much as the idea of Marner or Rantanen makes me feel it could help our offense a lot, I don't want us to sign any FA's this year unless its a bottom pairing D-man. We have enough prospects and forwards already to fill in the roster.

I think this is Francis scrambling to save his job in some ways.

I think this is Francis scrambling to save his job in some ways.

Based on what we heard about about our ownership not allowing a long term focus, this feels like a telling move. They gave in on that, perhaps to Francis (if he was insisting on it) and are leaving him the keys for the rebuild. Or perhaps this is a lame duck move for Francis and they've already "agreed to part ways" after this season.

I will be honest. I am confused. Does this mean all the lip service Leiweke provided recently was exactly that? They are not "pushing for the playoffs" next season? If yes, then I am definitely relieved. But till the puck drops next season, I am going to hold my breath wondering if they are going to go channel their inner stupid in the off-season and do something.

Im confused too. Why pay for Stephenson and Montour if your are going the long term rebuild approach.

I know ownership is worried about the optics if we just blatantly tanked for a season or so but we're doing this half in/half out approach and suck anyway.

That’s a hell of a haul. I’m a fan of this trade even though it means moving my favorite player to a team I dislike. Bjorkstrand getting a cup would be an amazing bonus.

Yep. Two first round picks in 2026, plus two first round picks in 2027 on top of what Kraken already have. That will set the prospect pool up nicely. After that it's time to start gunning for the playoffs with a real team.

Another thing to add here is that both 2026 and 2027 1st round picks are top-10 protected.

The 2026 pick can potentially become a top 10 pick in 2027 right?
