It's OK to love a shitty player, even if you feel better saying you never did.

I was the One and Only Jayson Megna fan around these parts.
Thing is, I was a fan of Bjugstad, even named my ATD team Bjugstud's or something ridiculous, so it's just a matter of me taking the homer glasses off and suddenly realizing he was crap.

Expansion since the early 2000's has watered down personnel league wide. Not many teams are going to have the perfect "3rd line center" or perfect depth players up and down their line ups. You're always going to have your ZAR's, Glass Adams, Manbearpigs, Scuderis, ECT.

It's just the reality of a watered down league (and Salary cap has a play in it too). There really is no sense complaining because it's just not going to be perfect all the time. Some go through droughts too.. it doesn't always mean we have to get rid of a player the first sign they're not producing. Patience is virtue, if you let it ride out and sometimes they snap out of it.

2000% disagree that the league is watered down

It's parity. Every bottom six is decent now. Hard to get an easy advantage there anymore. No one runs purely shitty skating defensive bottom sixes. Makes it hard to get an advantage.

AHL and ECHL are playing good hockey with good players. Way better than 15 years ago when a decent Gold beer leaguer could potentially be ECHL guy.

I'd imagine these guys would be NHLers if it was so watered down.

But that’s just it- when people are complaining about bottom 6 depth, they’re often complaining that the bottom 6 isn’t elite.

Even ZAR, loathe him as I do, is a legit NHL player, just not a good offensive one.

He's elite vs 1996 3rd liners

He's average today because the floor has risen. That's not watered down. That's an INCREASE in skill.

I hope they play Rodrigues enough so we don't have to see ZAR playing when healthy.

I'm intrigued with Rodrigues from what I've read. I've had him pegged just as a speedy defensive bottom-6 winger, but there appears to be some skill there and he has position flexibility to switch between C, LW and RW. He may be a really useful player to keep for next year, and I can't imagine that his next deal will be that dissimilar from Sheahan's 1 year extension in 2018. I think Rodrigues may be an under the radar great move by JR, his 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 seasons were both really solid and his scouting report gives me similar vibes to McCann.

If he's a sneaky-good bottom-sixer, all criticism of the trade goes out the window regardless of the performance of Kahun and Sheary. I'm rooting for him.

A lot of the scouting on Rodrigues seems to be similar to Kahun, but without as high an upside and better speed. I’m intrigued, but I’ll be honest, I wouldn’t watch Buffalo if you paid me, so I have no idea.

If the end-result of all of this is:
  • Sheary has some chemisty with Crosby and performs roughly as well as Kahun would have done, then walks in the summer.
  • Rodrigues is a solid bottom-sixer instead of a tweener like Kahun, and stays on for about $1-$1.5M less than Kahun would require.
I'll call the trade a success.

I think this would soften my stance that we traded the wrong Dominick. Real wildcard in Rodrigues, but I wonder if he does show well here whether some other team sees him as a middle six guy and throws more money at him than we can. If we lose him and Sheary, the whole trade becomes a wash if we don't win the cup.

So you are saying this Sheary/Erod trade never happens if they kept Archibald?

Agreed.

Since there's no Salary Cap thread right now, I guess that discussion can go here?

I'm assuming Murray, Bjugstad, and Riikola will be gone in the offseason. Johnson might be gone depending on how POJ progresses and if there's any LD in free agency that catches GMJR's eye. I hope they do not re-sign Schultz and Sheary. I'm assuming Marleau goes back to SJ. McCann, Simon, and Rodrigues will likely be re-signed.

This I disagree.

Hicks-Barnes-Murray

That's a real third line used by the Pens in 96. That's 20-39-22 points in the year averaging about 60 games. They likely outproduce back then what ZAR is doing today, but not precipitously.

I don't think ZAR is that far off a drop off. I hate the dude. But...he'd be in the league back then, easily. He's no participation trophy recipient of expansion team player slots.

In more offensive roles Barnes and Murray would have very successful years. And in that position, ZAR probably is never getting 60-90pts like those guys.

Would Dadonov be a fit for RW1 in that scenario?

Player-wise, yes, most likely. Cap-wise, not so sure. Dadonov's next contract scares me and he's already 30 years old.

Cap wise I'm not sure there's any room for a guy people would like as Sid's RW. Barring the return of Sheary, that looks like Simon's role, or an open door for Poulin to come through like a steam train.
