Looking through some of the names that might be available at the trade deadline. Here's a list of the pending UFA defensemen from the bottom 14 teams in the league. Only 1-way contracts listed.

Predictions, values, speculation? Only a handful of these players are likely to re-sign with their current teams. Who do you rank as the top targets?

Sorted by cap hit:
NJD - Subban $9m
SEA - Giordano $6.75m
ARI - Stralman $5.5m
DET - Leddy $5.5m
PHI - Ristolainen $5.4m
DET - DeKeyser $5m
CHI - DeHaan $4.55m
DAL - Klingberg $4.25m
BUF - Miller $3.875m
MTL - Chiarot $3.5m
BUF - Butcher $2.82m
NYI - Hickey $2.5m
DET - M Staal $2m
PHI - Braun $1.8m
MTL - Kulak $1.85m
OTT - Holden $1.7m
DET - Stecher $1.7m
CLB - Kukan $1.65m
CLB - Harrington $1.6m
BUF - Hagg $1.6m
NYI - Chara $1.5m
DAL - Sekera $1.5m
ARI - Lyubushkin $1.35m
OTT - Brown $1.2m
NYI - Greene $1m
BUF - Pysyk $900k
PHI - Yandle $900k
CHI - Gustafsson $800k
VAN - Hunt $800k
MTL - Wideman $750k

I would really like to see the TML package up Ritchie and Dermott for Lyubushkin. Not sure what we would need to add but likely a later round pick. Great third pairing guy to take Holl’s spot if he continues to play like ass.

I think Stralman at 50% retained should be worth something like a 3rd. Still playing 20min, should be a decent depth pickup.

Problem is Arizona only has one retention slot left, which is likely going to Kessel.

Something for everyone up top. Giordano is the all situations LHD that brings the experience and leadership organizations love. Leddy and Chiarot are underneath as 2nd pairing LHD of contrasting styles (smooth skating puck mover and defensive D, respectively). Klingberg is the right situation away from being again being an impact offensive producer from the right side. Underneath, Ristolainen still has the toolbox to be a bit of everything.

Is Subban worth the effort of finding a 3rd party to retain at this point? I do like Stralman and Miller as 3rd pairing specialists.

You forgot Leddy. He’s been decent this year. Could be traded with retention, could be re-signed.

Someone take Hickey for a draft pick so Lou doesn’t get any ideas to sign him again.

I feel like his extensive playoff experience might help Subban garner some interest. How tight do they call, uh, “tripping” in the playoffs?

PK has a 9m cap hit but his actual salary is negligible, he was owed 8m this year and got 6m in a signing bonus. The third team just has to retain a part of what’s left of his 2m salary, so it won’t cost too much to get done.

The difficulty with Subban is if we use last season’s third party salary retention deals as a benchmark then the 3rd team should be receiving somewhere between 30% and 50% of Subban total trade value with double retention.

Out of this group I’d probably rank the big fishes to be
RD Klingberg
LD Chairot
LD Leddy
and L&RD Giordano < though age may keep him on a 1 year deal if he decides to keep playing.

My skepticism relates to the logistics of a Subban trade. A deal most likely has to involve a 3rd party, but the teams willing to do that for fair value will have options to use what is a limited resource. Arizona is one of the few that would care about the actual dollars and it has used up 2 retention slots already, with Kessel and Stralman on the board. The Yotes are a non-factor here. Consider Detroit, which probably doesn't care and played that role in the Savard trade last season. The Wings have 2 remaining, with Leddy on the table. Saving that final slot for a better player that is a 1st or 2nd tier target for a contender would be more prudent than burning it on Subban, unless the value is similar.

$2.75M in cap and a bag of pucks in real dollars. Last year teams retained and got a 4th (Foligno and Savard) for doing so
