The absolute worst thing we could do is some dumb trade by moving younger assets for an aging vet at the deadline. If they want to swing for the fences and bring in a stud, then that's one option. It depends how desperate management is to try and make the playoffs. My own interpretation is that they really want to make the playoffs to get some good publicity, bring in a bit of extra cash, show key players they have a chance to win here, etc.

Rantanen and his agent definitely overplayed their hand and he’s having remorse now. They probably asked for the moon and expected Colorado to cave in or get close to his ask.

Colorado called their bluff and said fine, started looking at trades, got an offer they liked and pulled the trigger. Good for them.

If you didn’t want to leave and were willing to sign a team friendly deal, you should have done it from the get go.

He’s going to get a large deal either way, but it won’t be from Colorado.

Or Ottawa.

Next we’ll see McDavid coming to Ottawa in trade proposals.

Rantanen wanted more money than MacKinnon and Sakic didn’t want to go there.

That is believable.

I doubt that Sakic would have traded Rantanen if he knew that Rantanen wanted to stay, would take less than he was asking, and would sign at the same or less level as McKinnon.

Sakic likely made the trade to avoid losing Rantanenen who was requesting a much higher salary than he was willing to pay and did not think Rantanen would lower his demands.

We need to ship someone out if we want to acquire a top center or winger because we do not have the cap space at this time. I doubt that happens this season.

Perhaps in the off-season we can acquire an expensive UFA as we will have Giroux' $6.5M available, Forsberg's $2.75M, plus the rising cap. Trading Perron would free up an additional $4M. Something can be done to improve the roster next season but it will have to wait until the offseason.

Rantanen wants to go somewhere he knows he will score.

Few offer the cores we do with scoring ability. Tkachuk, Stutzle, Sanderson etc. We have the core and promise. We can also set the money. Rantanen is a young bonafide 50+ goal 100+ point scorer and playoff monster. He plays in any style of hockey and proven. He is worth the price tag. Few in the league are as good as he.

No one expected Gaudreau to go Columbus until he did. Carolina does not play scoring hockey cause of personnel, Ottawa would be able to.

Anyway, even if wishful thinking, nice thought.

MacKinnon arguably signed an extremely team friendly deal. That is where the problem comes in. Internal salary structure is a thing, but only to a point. 14M would have been a very fair ask for Rantanen. Even before the cap numbers were announced for the next few seasons, everybody knew there was going to be a big adjustment. Rantanen coming in at 12.4M or less, unless it is on a shorter term deal where he can re-up under the new cap like Matthews did, is a massive hometown discount.

NGL I don't think Rantanen will fit in Green's system either. He's struggling in Carolina's heavy cycle system and has only shown success playing in a very high tempo system with MacKinnon and Makar. Ehlers would be my priority for both fit and being cheaper. Ehlers played in PoMo's forechecking system before and has always been excellent 5on5, and here will get prime PP oppourtunity.

Not to sound judgemental but I find it strange that guys like Rantanen who play their whole career in one place aren't willing to take a bit less to stay where they're familiar.

I would get it if he wanted to chase a Cup, but he's already won one and the Avs are a great team still.

I don't blame players. You can't control how a team is run and so much can change over time with teams. Imagine taking a hometown discount in Chicago back in 2017 to stay there for 8 years, and only a few years later they are a completely different management group, full scale rebuild, etc.

The only thing you can control is your compensation and your terms.

Also, if you give a team a discount, there is no guarantee that the cap is going to be used to help you win. Look at McDavid, and how the extra cap was used for most of his run there. He would have been better off signing for max, which he should have been in a position to get because he had no guarantee that the team would use the cap wisely, which makes securing the bag the better value play.

Imagine your boss telling you to take less money, but he assures you whatever you leave on the table will maximize your experience there, but you have to way to determine how the money is spent, and then he takes the 20k you left on the table and spends it on a photocopier that nobody uses. Players should always 100 percent go for the max money and max control because it's the only thing they can guarantee.

There's zero chance we would be able to afford his money or terms.

14M+, likely front loaded with signing bonuses, NMC, etc. We can't even fit that in cap wise realistically, let alone considering the cash.

If the market for Rantanen as a rental was low, like a 1st and a few B/C pieces, similar to Hall and others, and Carolina prefers to make a hockey trade for a player with term, Rantanen might make sense as a swing for the fences rental if Carolina was open to doing something like Norris for Rantanen, which I doubt they would be.

There is apparently a universe where every possibility exists, and even with that in mind I still don't think there is one where Rantanen would extend here and we could afford his ask.
