Trade and Free Agency - 2024-25

Less than that when you need to fill out the rest of the roster.
Plus, given the state of the economy one might want to plan for the lower end of the projected cap range.

I guess $35 million (7 for five) for the fragile likes of Brock Boeser is what we can expect. An upgrade on Johansson yay.

I really hope Guerin has all but a signed document regarding Kaprizov sticking around before looking at Boeser's, Nelson's or even Ehlers' way, no matter the costs.

I think it'll be the other way around. GMBG needs to put a "win now" team on the ice that makes Kap want to stay.

I don't think the quality prospect pool is much of a selling point when it'll take a couple of years for them to find their groove in the NHL.

I really don’t think that’s the case. Especially for Fs. They tend to peak around 25.

Both Ohgren & Yurov have been slow-cooked. They aren’t raw projects

I was thinking all Rossi, Boeser, Nelson would be signing around 7M/yr. Don't think that would be a cap problem. Maybe you'd have to buy out Hartman or something but it should be fine. The roster is pretty much full.

Even with those 3 in the fold, that's only 11 forwards + 5 defensemen. Need 2 more of each, and even they're going to be low salary/ELC guys (Ohgren, Yurov, Buium and Jiricek), that's still ~$4M.

I’m more afraid of what Billy might pay Nelson… Boeser it doesn’t seem like has as many fans around the league as he does on these boards.

UFA status aside, I don't know how you can justify Nelson making as much as Boldy for sure, That said, I could see Guerin giving him 7.5M.

Boeser, I don't give him more than 5.5M on a 4 year deal.

Is that a problem? Cap is going up by a lot. I thought I did the math, it should be fine.

No but when I said 20M, I was already assuming a full roster (-3 forwards).

There should be ~20M cap space for Rossi + 2 forwards.
Per Cap Wages for 2025-26, we have:

9 forwards - $39.75M
5 defensemen - $27.675M
2 goalies (including wallstedt) - 5.95M
Buyouts - $1.667M

Total = $75M
Cap = $95.5M
Space $20.5M

With Rossi, Boeser and Nelson, that's 12 forwards - need 1-2 more for 13-14 total
Need 2 defensemen for 7 total
Also probably going to want to keep at least $1M in space for injuries/space accruals/bonuses

That is something for the fans to look forward too, not so much the players. Even slow cooked players (usually) need an adjustment period to the NHL.

Kap will get paid either way if he stays or goes. There are a lot of ifs and buts when it comes to unproven players/prospects. So why does he wait and see if everything pans out, when he'll have the opportunity to go to a "better" team than what he's seen in MN the last 2 seasons (maybe 3 if FA falls flat this off-season)?

Seriously he's had Rask, Hartman, Steel, Rossi, and JEE as his centers here in MN. That is a rang of "why are they in the NHL" to a 2C. His best wingers have been Zucc and Boldy. They are/were nice top-6 wings to have, but they aren't top tier players.

Most I would give Nelson is $5.5M for 2-3 years.

I don't think we will be able to land anyone who puts us in double stupid territory but you never know.
Nelson is the exact opposite of what Guerin told us the plan was so I expect an over pay for him in term and money

Marner would be interesting but what are the odds of that happening and what would it cost us?

I'm pretty much good with what we can get because most of them are unlikely to sign here. 1 guy for the 2nd line works for now. Then let the proving youth fill in the gaps.

We really need Yurov to hit bad.

If Yurov and Ohgren can chip in 15 to 20 goals each next year I think we will be in good shape.

Plus that is a lot to put on an untested rookie. More than likely we do it by committee short term.
