Trade and Free Agency - 2024-25

All this Hanzal talk has me wondering what Fletcher would do if he was given the GM role for the current Wild on July 1st.
Johansson extended for 6.45 x 5; Kaprizov traded to the Rangers for two picks and Brennan Othmann; Rossi extended for 9.25 x 8; Brock Nelson signed for 8.75 x 6.

I want to see your list!

1. Spurgeon re-signing
2. Buyouts
3. FJ draft pick (really wtf was that?)
4. Staal/MarJo trade
5. Drafting 7 LD from the '20 and '21 draft classes (some were overagers drafted in the following drafts).
6. Complete incompetence when it comes to the AHL team.

Really, outside of a couple of things, everything that GMBG has done I do not like.

The skid the past few weeks has been as rough a stretch as I can remember. Absolute torture watching this team with no Kaprizov and Ek. Made worse by the fact that we have Ohgren, Buium, Yurov, Jiricek, Wallstedt, Heidt as close to ready, or NHL ready prospects and yet none were accessible to us to ease our suffering.

We have Trenin and Brazeau ….thats enough

I just look at the buyouts as us putting a placeholder on our cap space so we didn't do anything stupid with it until next season.

Bad asset management is bad asset management. $1.7m in dead cap, $1m overpay for Foligno, $2m overpay for Trenin, etc. It all adds up.

Pretty sure at the time of the signing we all knew the end years were going to suck. Buyouts or no buyouts the cap space was not available and done by another gm.

Agreed on the other contracts.

Suter and Parise at $15M would be just as restrictive with minimal benefit. Buyouts have stopped bothering me. Certain moves around the buyouts have taken that place.

Is Suter >= than Merril? Is the shell of Parise >= the random 4th liners on the team this year? There is an extra ~$1.5m in cap space the team would have over the dead cap and paying those replacement players. This is without using the possible LTIR space for Parise.

Is having Suter and Parise in the locker room worth 1.5M in extra cap space? I can't possibly know but based on what we heard, probably not?

Suter went deep into the last Playoffs the last 2 seasons and will be in the Playoffs again this year. Parise won a Playoff series with COL last year.

The locker room stuff seems really overblown by the GM who has used similar excuses to get rid of a few other players.

Also if the locker room is so good why aren't the players traded for re-signing with the Wild, and then go elsewhere for similar money? The vet players that are re-signing are all seeming to get overpayed with a lot of NTCs involved.

Every team has this. Our books are fairly clean moving forward. To go with a solid core and an intriguing prospect pool.

We got Middleton, Gus, Faber, Ohgren for Fiala, Talbot, Kahkonen. Complete fleece job. We have Faber, Boldy, Ek locked up longterm for barely $20M combined. Those things are way more impactful than Trenin being overpaid or Marat being marginally less shitty than Brazeau, etc.

Guerin is a blowhard, but he’s overall done a solid job. What do you expect? Scotty Bowman?

We aren’t supposed to be as good as Florida or Dallas, etc yet. They still have 40% more cap than us. But they don’t have Ohgren, Jiricek, Yurov, Buium, Wallstedt, Heidt etc. The real test will be a year from today when some of these young guys are ready to contribute.

What bothers me is that guys like Ohgren and Jiricek could have been up, but we've had to send potentially helpful prospects down due to our cap situation. That is where the overpayments such as Trenin hurt. Those little overpayments here and there have added up resulting with us relying on emergency callups only. And Wallstedt should have been up here this year. Again, that's on Guerin.

I agree with Ohgren and to a lesser extent Jiricek. I also don’t think either is quite ready for NHL duty even if they could’ve been upgrades this spring with all the injuries. Wallstedt, unfortunately, has been so awful this year from start to finish that it’s hard to support him being an NHLer.

My point is that the team is definitely in a healthy place overall. Granted that could all change this summer if Kaprizov’s camp hints at wanting to test FA or if Rossi is traded for a plodding veteran. But those things haven’t happened yet so no sense in all the doom and gloom.
