Trade and Free Agency - 2024-25

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm not sure how someone addresses it and then still comes away saying that phrase about him. I want to understand it, but I don't right now.
Because the second half of that season Rossi looked lost. If the only reason someone looks competent is because they are playing next to a franchise player, are they really competent?

Does that mean Johansson and Zuccarello looked like deer in headlights as well? They were his most frequent and worst performing linemates in that period. Were they our 3 worst players on the team last season, or are there more deer in the road?

I'm going to reiterate, in case it's been forgotten, I did not advocate for a long-term contract for him at that time.

They were all terrible, especially Zuccarello.

And why do you think that is? Surely an $8-9M level player would be able to solidify their spot on the top power play.
Probably best answered by somebody who thinks Rossi should get $8-9M.

Surely a future NHL player should be able to solidify their spot in Wisconsin's top 6. Surely a future stud defenseman should be able to solidify their spot in the NHL over Merrill or Bogosian.

Hardly a difference if you’re advocating for high $7M range.

Guys, you have to face the truth that the cap is going up and the players and their agents know that as well, so you have to add at least $2M to every contract you would offer any player. Only the cap hit of our bottom 6ers are ok now because they've been overpayed already.

So players with a cap hit of 5M are now worth 7M and so on. If u do the math, offering rossi 7M would be basically offering him 5M under new circumstances.

Besides I don't get the logic thats going on here: Guerin overpays guys like Trenin, Foligno, ...., by 1M or more and this is ok for most posters. When Rossi asks for 9M instead of 7M this would be a big problem for u guys? Even with the cap rising?

Offering Rossi 7M would have been fine and a good offer prior the leagues announcement reagarding the rising cap space. But now it's too late and Guerin is gonna use this for his agenda.

I've said this last summer: Rossis price will only go up the longer they wait. Here we are now. But to be honest, I think Guerin didn't want to resign Rossi last season and don't want to resign him now, because Rossi is not part of his future plan for the team. Size rules, you know.

Size matters, like it or not. This team is proof of that. You’re not just talking undersized, you’re talking the smallest center in the league territory.

Cap hits also matter, rising cap or not. You cannot watch this team on a daily basis and think Rossi has any business being the second highest paid player on this roster (or highest, if there is a future with no Kaprizov) for the foreseeable future with no large deals on the immediate horizon. If that is what Rossi and his camp expect, they are every bit the issue as people want to portray Guerin as given his standing on this team is nowhere near that priority.

I actually think Rossi’s price is going down currently, given how shitty he’s been playing recently.

The cap going up doesn't mean that everyone's contract is going to go up equally. Just look at every other top pro league (capped or uncapped). The lion's share of new money is going to go to the top tier players. The best UFAs per season will continue to get overpaid. The lower raisers will happen with middle tier UFAs and short term RFAs. The bottom will continue to be the bottom with league mins being the only thing that really raise.

$5m to $7m is a 40% increase. Some simple math the cap for next season is ~20% increase from when JEE signed (21-22). So a $5m contract would be worth $6m next season. Going off the projected cap it would take until the 27-28 season to hit the 40% increase to make $5m = $7m

Based on the last ~15 seasons, making decisions based projected caps raises is bad business in hockey. This recent jump in cap seems more like an adjustment to what it would have been without the COVID flat cap.

The cap went up an average of 2.87% from the post-lockout season to the pre-COVID season. if you extrapolate that raise to the current season the cap picture looks like this:
19-20: 81.5m (pre-COVID cap season)
20-21: 83.84m
21-22: 86.24m
22-23: 88.72m
23-24: 91.27m
24-25: 93.89m (88m current)
25-26: 96.58m (95.5m projected)
26-27: 99.35m (104m projected)
27-28: 102.21m (113.5m projected)

Yes, the NHL added 2 new teams and relocated a 3rd. But, on the other hand regional TV deals are starting to fall apart. I think if I was to redo the math I would go with a 3% yearly increase as a baseline once the market resets. I'm guessing that happens right around the ~$100m cap point, which would be the 26-27 season. The current CBA also expires before the 26-27 season.
