Speculation: Trade and Free Agency - 2024-25

That's a little more than I wanted to pay but I won't lose sleep, he better look like the guy we had in his last stint here

I'm guessing there might've have been multiple teams interested at a 2026 3rd price, and it came down to who was most desperate to beat that.

Whether or not we should've been is another question.

I like it IF we're pretty sure Kaprizov will be back for the playoffs

No Guerin hated him
Not to be a prick, but: source? Sturm was offered a long-term extension that he turned down, and was subsequently traded before he could become a free agent. He mentioned his being stuck in a 4th line center role for the foreseeable future as a reason that he turned it down.
The trade from Minnesota came as a surprise to Sturm, but in hindsight, it probably should not have. The Athletic reported in March that Sturm turned down a long-term contract extension.

Rather than hating him, it seems more likely to me that Guerin would be happy to have the guy he wanted to commit to long-term on the team in the role he wanted him for, 4th line center and face-off specialist.

Apparently Dallas offered Johnston an 8 year deal slightly over 8M.

Guerin you watching how it's done?

Honestly, I can't remember because Guerin has had issues with a lot of players. I might be misremembering but I honestly thought that Sturm got traded because he didn't see opportunities here and that was partly on Guerin bringing in guys over him.

We're going to trade for Nico Sturm, aren't we?

Isn't this exactly what he should be doing?
And the guy he brought in over him was Rossi.

I like Nico Sturm, but he's a 4th liner. Fast and big, with a good defensive game. Not physical for all his size, but that speed and length helps to be a factor all over the ice. Can't see that he is much of a difference maker for this team, though.

The guy he brought in over him was Jost and then Steel.
I was talking about Sturm seeing what was in front of and behind him. Sturm didn't re-sign because he had Hartman, JEE, and Gaudreau in front of him, and Rossi coming up behind him. Sturm was traded for Jost; he had no way of knowing Jost would be on the team, and Jost wouldn't have been on the team had Sturm re-signed.

They signed Steel the season after.
