I'm tired of seeing people come here after a loss just to say how amazing the other team's goalie was. "Well played, USA/Finland/Sweden! Your goalkeeper was really good!" Give me a break. We all know what you're really trying to say.

You're not fooling anyone with your fake compliments. It's obvious you're just bitter about losing and trying to make excuses. If you want to praise the other team's goalie, fine, but at least be genuine about it.

Let's be real: Losing sucks, but trying to sugarcoat it with insincere compliments just makes you look like a sore loser. Man up, accept the loss, and move on.

Next time you feel the urge to post about how great the other team's goalie was, stop and think. Are you really being a good sport, or just being passive-aggressive?

Should empty net goals count? Take away the freebie and he’s not leading the tournament. Few more guys that are far more deserving than him. If he wins it it’s a career achievement award.
Do they count on the scoresheet? Do they count towards other players stats? Of course they count lol. He’d still be in the lead, albeit tied, if you take away his absurdly huge 1-point-total empty net points so it’s a stupid argument anyways.
It’s not like he’s leaching points that way.
Nobody is an absolute standout so far.

To date, if he gets awarded the mvp, there is no sure argument to be made for any other. His play has been on par with the rest of the team and it will not only be because of legacy that he could potentially win it.

I selfishly want one of my Avs guys to win it but if it goes to Mcdavid, Crosby, or whoever else, congratulations to them and they’ve all been solid if unspectacular just like Crosby. But the fact that, in this scenario, Crosby will be a tournament top point producer, has led them to the victory as captain, along with but certainly not because of his legacy, while also being injured, puts him as the front runner right now.

If one play is your bar then give it to Mcavoy for punishing 2 huge hits each on Cindy & mcbaby into disappearing for the entire game beyond the 2 min mark of the first period.
One play? That's literally the one play being debated and that the poster is responding to. It's not the sole reason for Crosby possibly being mvp.

Empty net goals to secure the mvp of this tournament is like a glorified retirement gift. Take away his empty net goal and he falls back into a tie with guys that have had a far greater impact than Cindy did. If he wins it it’ll be a participation trophy, nothing more.

Without the gift goal he’s tied with players that have had a far greater impact. A single, empty net goal does not make an mvp , nor should it be a determining factor in choosing an mvp. Unless that’s what Canadian hockey has become.

You got me, I fell for it. Clearly you are just a Crosby hater. I hope he scores a hat trick along with the overtime goal and gets all the awards just so you get to hear about it for eternity lol.

You’re mistaken, just not a ballwasher that drools over the stat line.

For sure. You look at a player's ENTIRE body of work.

You don’t think Hellybuck has been fantastic? IMO it doesn’t demean a club’s skaters to say their best player is the goalie. Were the great Russian players of the 70’s lesser than great because their best player was Tretiak?

Hellebuyck? Matthew Tkchacuk? McDavid? I give each of those 3 between 15% and 5% odds. A wide open contest, for sure, but those 3 have some edge.

What? How do you come to that conclusion when you're talking about the best goaltender so far in this tournament and certainly one of the best in the NHL.

If USA wins 80% Hellebuyck takes it unless a forward goes off.

If Canada wins 80% chance. Crosby gets it even if he only records one point. McDavid takes it if he has a monster game.

Yeah that's kind of what I'm thinking.

Not sure I'd go as high as 80% chance though - as I think final game will count a lot, especially if someone has a huge game. Any of the best players can go off and win MVP. McDavid, MacKinnon...hell, Auston Matthews could return after being injured, score 4 goals in a monster game and be named MVP despite a disappointing tournament to date based solely on a 1 game performance.

So - still mostly wide open due to short tourney size, but overall I'd have Crosby/Helle as the 2 favorite, with McDavid #3.

A lot depends on the final, it feels kind of like the 2002 Olympics where there was no favourite until Sakic decimated the final game. In terms of now, for USA I'd have to think Eichel or Hellebucyk, though not playing one of only four games has to somewhat hurt. For Canada I could see Crosby getting it like how Selanne got the 2014 Olympic MVP (no, you are not actually the most valuable player in the event, but you scored and it's a feel good story for a veteran) or either of McDavid or MacKinnon if they put up some points in the final.

I get that in a tourney like this the winning team is always going to get the MVP, unless maybe the losing goalie posts a 0.33 gaa, .989 sv% through the tournament. But going into this game I thought Slavin deserved a ton of votes, and after this game I feel it even more.

Only time I ever really see Slavin play is when Rangers play him (so 10 times a year or so with playoffs) but goddamn he owned the ice and shut down Canadian offense at every opportunity. Was very impressive and frustrating to see. The guy was a legit black hole for Canadian offense.

This. He won’t get any love from most because they only watch stats but he was absolutely rock solid out there, shutting down the best players in the world.
