Managers wearing uniforms makes sense to me, because it's just a tradition passed down from the period when it was as likely as not that the manager was also an active player. They don't much do that anymore, obviously, but the rules still support it, and as most managers are former players anyway and are more comfortable dressing in a uniform than a suit, the attire remained as it was through inertia.

On the subject of Torts, this doesn't bother me in the slightest. Many things about him do, primarily the hypocrisy and capriciousness, but this is less than nothing. No aspect of his attire impacts his ability to do his job, he can wear whatever he wants on the bench, within reason.
Of course you are absolutely right.

I just wonder if they find it funny themselves. Old Don Zimmer with his prodigious belly hanging over his baseball pants always made me chuckle. Of course he did get in the play once with Pedro Martinez!

When he was in Vancouver they put a cot in his office so he could take naps just to try and get him to come into work more.

In a few years he’s gonna be coaching in his pajamas.

Tradition. It came from when player-managers were a lot more common.

Wearing suits makes less sense to me. It’s a hockey game, not a gala.
Oh, I know where it came from. Pete Rose was the last one, I believe. But my guess is he was an extreme outlier at that point. Maybe I'm wrong.

Regardless, some traditions age well. Others, not so much.

No big deal, but if I was a player, I'd want the same treatment as the coach where they don't have to wear suits to the game either.

Who said they can't be themselves? Players like Matthews and Lundqvist have no issues dressing to impress in a business attire. We don't need them dressing like clowns though. I assume you don't work in a professional environment.
I actually do need them dressing like clowns.

I would genuinely enjoy seeing that for a game, though it'd be way, way funnier if it was Boudreau (also, I think he's got the right sense of humor to actually do it.) Maybe we can find a team that has a good sense of humor on April Fools' Day.
And Roy could wear the goalie gear mask and all.
