He explained how star sampling works, you just wanna ignore info that doesn’t fit your worldview. Which is your choice, I’m just gonna label it more accurately.

And I spoke in general and said “father figure”, not talking about yours or anyone else’s dad. That’s how I see it, feel free to disagree, but it’s weird to me how eager some posters are to defend the hardass even pro players often dislike.

LOL. I'm defending a 2 time Jack Adams award winning and Cup winning coach who's in the top 10 in all time wins. And doesn't seem like that many players actually hate him.

Hardass or not, those qualify him as an extremely well accomplished coach. He has been successful regardless of coaching style. I played sports my whole life and had some hardass coaches. If we won with that coach, that's important. Coaches aren't supposed to be friends.

In sum, stats aren't taught well. Let's get rid of the DOE.

Well, as an insider, do better next time
Don't need to be an insider. Just need to think about it. It probably helps that analysing surveys is part of my profession.
But none of what I said means the poll isn't right, depending on what you think "right" is. It could be perfectly accurate. But it most likely isn't. I wouldn't treat it as an accurate representation of the 850 players that have suited up this year. It's an accurate representation of the 65 that answered that question, and based on the survey it is likely true that Torts is the least liked coach, if you could everybody to answer. I just don't put much faith in the 38% number or whatever it was.

Poll sponsored by Mike Babcock and he still got 7.69% of the vote.
It turns out this wasn't even a poll, Babs just went through 93 players phones to see who they disliked most. Well, almost 93. There were a few rookies he had write down a list of their most disliked coaches and he shared those lists with the mentioned coaches.

Glad that's part of your profession. But, accepting that's the case, you should know polls don't claim to be perfectly accurate about the entire population they represent. That's why they include a margin of error, which isn't always correct either. So, yeah, it might be 34, 42, or if it's an unrepresentative sample, 20 or 60. But, the point was, for a poll, that's a good sample size.

Ehhh... maybe. Depends what you're going to do with it.
So... what have we learned.
Torts is very likely the least liked coach. 18 different coaches received at least one vote. Some of whom are not actually coaches in the league.
I'll be really interested to see how high Torts is in the list when he is not a coach. That should be interesting.

I already criticized the poll based on current vs. past coaches, and said that's flawed as did the person you quoted before me
On that, we all agree. Quit hand waiving and kicking cans. My point was just that it's a good sample size for a poll.

He got wind that Modano would hit 1,500 career games on the last game of the regular season, which was the last of his career. So he scratched him the second to last game. Just because.

It’s strange how people keep misrepresenting this story when there’s so many awful things Babcock actually did.

And man, some people in this thread are really struggling with the idea that some players really hate Torts.

Honestly I bet you very few if any of his former players voted for him in this poll. The general consensus seems to be that players love playing for him.

It just means 38% of the league is soft

He's got the details wrong but not the main point. Babcock actually scratched him in the games leading up to the end of the season, not the last game specifically. But he surely knew by scratching Modano that he wouldn't reach 1500. Modano was just on Spittin Chiclets, check it out

Makes sense. Players don't like to lose, and torts is a loser. If making it out of the first round 3 times in 20 years is your goal, you're soft.
