I expect that if he hasn't already (he probably has), Stolarz will solidify his position tonight as game 1 starter for the playoffs.

Feels like we really don't make a big enough deal about how often we've seen THAT performance last night, this season.

Flat. Lacking energy. Heavy. Slow. Outworked and outbattled all over the ice. I've lost track of how regularly we've seen it, but it's becoming quite consistent.

The 10 game stretch prior to last night is the first time this season where I've actually liked their play for an extended stretch. But I'm a process > results fan now, and I just don't see a process that is consistent with playoff success.

I fully expect to see that lethargic broken outworked version of this team multiple times in the playoffs. It's who they are.

IDK watch more teams is my advice. The Panthers lost 5 in a row and their fanbase was lamenting the lack of effort over the last few weeks for example. That was their first complete 60 minute game in a month.

Ultimately that game does not matter outside of staying healthy.

I feel like our team goes based off how the top line goes. If the top line is flying, the rest of the team has legs, even if the top line isn't scoring they are setting the tone.

That’s a curse as much as it is a blessing. The Matthews-Marner duo also gets eaten up alive in matchup situations so when a team like Florida sticks Barkov out there they kill 2 birds with one stone.

Back at tonight with hopefully a better effort. Stolarz gets the net.
A win here will go a long way towards winning the division, a loss and the Panthers will start looking more and more like the playoff matchup.

Back to back character games.

Maybe they get a 'D' grade with a win.

It's funny, I thought Woll was starting to run away with it with those back to back strong performances against Calgary and Colorado, but then he shit the bed against Nashville and San Jose while Stolarz has been red hot and won multiple big games for us since.

I have started watching more teams the past few years, which is why it becomes easier to compare teams with good process which translates to success in the playoffs, to the Leafs.

The Panthers might have lost 5 in a row, but they play the same way - trying to stick to their strong fundamentals, and basically just rotating guys in and out; it doesn't matter who they dress, as they always manage to stick to their philosophies and principles.

Watching Tampa a ton this year has felt the same way.

Now compare that to the Leafs? I just don't think they have strong enough patterns, foundation, or process to translate into playoff success.

Their blueprint this season seems to be:
  • Rely heavily on your goaltender to compensate for your inability to move the puck out of your zone
  • Hope the stars can win you games.
That, to me, isn't sustainable.

I think Woll is better when at his best, but stolarz offers more consistency at the moment. Over time, i fully expect that Woll will be the better goalie.

Really feels like they once again need to be split up. I was just saying like 4-5 days ago leave the top 6 alone, but the top line has gone cold, and frankly even when they were hot I just don’t love how Matthews and Marner play off each other.

They have 5 games to figure it out.

I doubt we see any changes.

Except maybe Robertson gets blamed for Matthews and Marner's lack of production

Wouldn't hate it if Berube shuffled the deck up front a little bit. Switch Laughton, Robertson, and Jarnkrok around from where he has had them. We know that McMann-Domi-Robertson line works. Laughton has yet to find his footing, so give him a chance with some great players since he's on the wing anyways so far here. And maybe Jarnkrok & Holmberg can have that swedish connection. I'd like to see something like this:

Knies-Matthews-Marner
Laughton-Tavares-Nylander
McMann-Domi-Robertson
Lorentz-Holmberg-Jarnkrok

Oh we definitely won’t.
Robertson did himself no favours last night

No he didn't.

I would guess Pacs is 100% coming in for him once the playoffs start.

Robertson might be useful against TB or Car if the Leafs can get that far, but he will need to be limited against Florida and Ottawa

It shouldn’t even be ideological.

If a team has a matchup center like Barkov or Danault or Dubois or Coyle, or let’s just say a living breathing human being, split Matthews and Marner up and sacrifice one of them to get shut down. Let the other one escape to a third unit to make the matchup imbalance. Let the other team decide what they want to do, make a hard decision. Keep Willie and JT together and roll from there.

The idea that Matthews and Marner will one day be Jordan Pippen, like come on. These guys?

Robertson seems like a guy you want to almost want scratch every other game and give heavy, focused instruction to for every game he plays. Give him no rope and keep him hungry scoring. When he stays in the lineup he gets goofy.

When I first saw the schedule at the start of the season, saw these games, I never once thought they'd be this important. my goodness. win the goddamn thing

It's pretty crazy how much easier it's been for us to score against TB than Florida.

The last two regular seasons

8 games vs Florida = 17 goals scored
7 games vs TB = 30 goals scored

For the hundredth time, this team has to break up M and M. Then, get the 3rd line going too. If you have 2 lines, Florida will eat our lunch.

Playoff Game 1

Knies Matthews Domi
Patches JT Marner
McMann Laughton Nylander
Lorentz Kamph Holmberg

Well we gotta win this game if we want a chance of seeing the second round. Florida is not someone we can beat, need to avoid at all costs :(

That’s true, we can win games here and there if they aren’t playing well, especially in the regular season but we don’t have a strong enough middle six to consistently do it. That’s probably what most teams have too.

I feel like this game decides who plays thr Panthers in rnd1. This game is bar-none the biggest and most important of the year thus far. Lets see what this team is really about...

Win, and I have faith we can make a deep run.

Lose, my confidence in anything remotely cup related is nearly utterly deflated.

Go Leafs Go.
