You might get Gibson and Comtois for 13OA and a prospect but what are you giving the ducks for them to accept Mrazek?
Ducks have a ton of cap and in a trade for Gibson he would just be offsetting cap. If anything probably a 2nd added to that deal on the leafs side.

Agreed, Toronto adding a 2nd is fair.
You have to honest here. Using the term “prospect” is open to interpretation. Except for maybe 2 you wont want to move a Leaf prospect panning out likely means they HOPE he MIGHT end up as good as Comtois.
Also if you’re honest this fills 2 major holes.

I don’t think there’s any chance the Ducks give up both Gibson and Comtois for just a 1st and a prospect. Gibson isn’t a throw away for the Ducks. They don’t have to trade him. A 1st and prospect is probably the minimum of what it would take for Gibson, alone. Comtois is also not just a throw in so there would need to be more included if he’s in the deal. Then, factor in that Mrazek is a cap dump for Toronto and the Ducks don’t need him so it would likely require a 2nd and possibly more. Certain Toronto fans keep spinning it as them taking a huge risk in acquiring Gibson, as though it’s doing a favor to the Ducks, therefore it shouldn’t cost much to get him. Simply, not true. He’s the Ducks #1 and they have no issues with his cap hit and he won’t just be given away.

What do you consider Comtois' value in a straight up trade?

I think his value is more to the Ducks, currently, than what another teams would want to give. Two seasons ago, he showed that he’s a top 6 forward in the making. Then, he regressed this past season. Personally, I wouldn’t want to trade him because of that. If I had to place a value on him, I’d say he should be able to get a 2nd pretty easily but probably not much more than that. (Which is why I don’t think he should be traded) With that said, he’s certainly not free, which is basically what he is in the proposal.

How do Isles Fans see their goaltending picture going forward ? Do they want to move Varls (not necessarily to TOR) but in general and reduce the cap spent on their Goaltending, or does that salary structure work as Varls could be in a mentoring or support role for Sorokin?

NYI fans want to go into the season with the Sorokin/Varlamov tandem.

Assuming NYI continues to be competitive and Varlamov doesn’t fall of a cliff next season (not implying he will you just never know), I would like to see him re-signed for a more modest cap hit to continue to Russian tandem.

NYI has nothing in the pipeline that appears to be even remotely close to challenging for a backup spot over the next 2-3 seasons so as long as Varlamov wants to stay and is willing to take less, it’s a good fit.

Him and Sorokin have a great relationship (by all accounts) and he is the only other Russian speaker on the team. They seem to spend time together on the Island and the road and NYI will want to keep Sorokin happy as well as have two quality netminders as we’ve seen how important that is come playoffs.
