Would a Jake Muzzin for Semyon Varlamov one for one make sense for the Islanders and Leafs?

In the event of Campbell walking to UFA, the Leafs get 1 year of a 34 year old starter making $5 million who had a slow start to the year. Islanders have Sorokin ready to take the next step.

Islanders get 2 years of Jake Muzzin at $5.6 million to replace the Chara/Greene type the Islanders seem to like on defense, though I'm not sure what direction Lou and the Islanders are headed.

Who says yes, who says no?

No. last played 60 games in 13-14 (63).

Fine goalie always injured, we have one thanks. Why get a Russian Campbell?

Muzzin is also injury prone, no?
He is and it's a valid reason for you to not want him.

We just endured a year of goalie injuries and we cant take another year of it. I understand why you wouldnt want Muzzin but I also don't see why we would want Vharm.

Sometimes trade proposals make no sense for either side. I think we found one.

Where did I say that at all? Slow down cowboy.
Well I used starts to demonstrate his injuries and you countered with his games played being just fine (basically). Perhaps I should have just listed his injuries because that's a solid retort.

What it boils down to @AKL is I'm traumatized by goalie injuries and I want to stay away from risk. You need a durable goalie to get to the final. Yes the OP offered an injury prone D which might make the value fair but probably isn't helping either of us in the playoffs.

I don't mean to come off as accusatory, you have been a gentleman in this discussion and I'm enjoying it immensely.

Gonna stop you right here. I said if your expectations are 60+ games from your starting goalie, you're going to be disappointed. I never said anything about Varlamov or the number of games he plays.

I think this would be a smart move for NYI and TOR - The people turning down Varly for Campbell doesn't make much sense. Varly isn't as inconsistent as Mr.Soup

If it helps - could maybe add a forward like Joey Anderson who I'm pretty high on and think will crack our roster next year

They want to continue the platoon indefinitely?
Is there a GM in the league who values goaltending more than Lou? The Isles don't have another goalie ready to be backup, so if they dealt Varlamov they'd need to get a new backup. And Varlamov and Sorokin have a great relationship. I'd say this would be a real longshot.

Islanders get a top line 80 point winger for Barzal, a young potential top4 puck moving LD and a late first.

Toronto gets 13th overall a young potential top 6 winger and a veteran top 4 Rd.
I think this trade would address both teams needs and provides good value for both sides.

I don't think Jake would waive his NTC for the Islanders.

Too far from Western Ontario. No ties to New York. Disruptive for a young family already living close to home. Expensive, congested, massive foreign city.

I just don't see the attraction for Muzzin to give up his NTC to move to Long Island.

Next year, however, Jake has only limited trade protection for the last year of his contract. That's when a deal could more easily be made.

Does that help the Leafs in net?

I think help there is what the OP might ne looking for.

Wouldn’t really call it a platoon, it’s more of a tandem.

NYI has nothing in the pipeline that is even close to pushing for a backup spot in 23-24, so I think Varlamov will be re-signed for a more modest cap hit next summer. Plus, Sorokin and Varlamov have a good relationship on and off the ice and NYI values having another Russian around for Sorokin. On top of all that (and probably the most important piece), is that we’ve seen how important it is to have 2-3 solid netminders going into the playoffs. If NYI has any aspirations for making it back to the dance, trading Varlamov just opens up a whole that they already have filled.

If anything, NYI NEEDS TO ADD a third goalie this summer on top of Sorokin/Varlamov that can be a starter in the AHL, but has NHL experience and can backup if any of the two Russians miss significant time.

NYI will take Mrazek off TOR’s hands if they send Knies with him. :sarcasm:

As an Islander fan, I'd think about this...see what happens, but doesn't look half bad.

As for goaltending..We can't just have sorokin...we need Varly because the only depth beyond that is Corey Schneider...I mean...if Sorokin ever got injured for a long period of time and we had no proper 1B we'd be screwed. ...although, I think Schneider has a real legit shot at a comeback.

Personally...Your top 6 is fine. You need to replace and or do something with your bottom 6.....As for campbell...how much do you think he will ask for?

Watching the playoffs and it’s pretty clear having a great goalie (or one that is playing great in the moment) is key, even for the top teams.
The Leafs should try and get a great goalie. Who are the younger great goalies?
