Toronto is in big trouble... Matthews's injury is still there. Surgery incoming?

Matthews traveled to Germany last month to seek a sports surgeon opinions about his "upper body" injury that has been bothering him for a long time.

Many speculate it is still his wrist that is still problematic after many years.

Now news is that he "re-aggravated" it after "fighting through it" (Berube's own words) for the last weeks after coming back from a long absence.

Is this the time to find a top 6 C? Toronto's window is now and losing Matthews for months would be catastrophic for the franchise at this juncture.

Doubt that would be the plan. He has had this lingering issue for years. My guess would be he gets surgery in the offseason. Gets lots of rotation rest until the playoffs and hope for the best come game 1

Leafs are in trouble by.. Being first in the Atlantic despite Matthews being a non factor this season due to already being injured and being clearly injured when he did play (as well as tons of other injuries)?

If anything, this is the first time the Leafs might be able to do the Kucherov/Stone move at the TDL

We haven't had for a 1/3 of the season and we're still first in the Atlantic. We've had some of the most man games lost this year period.

At one point we we're so injured we we're running:

McMann - Tavares - Marner
Robertson - Holmberg - W. Nylander
Grebenkin - Minten - A. Nylander
Steeves - Dewar - Lorentz

(So no Matthews, Knies, Domi, Kampf, Jarnkrok, Pacioretty, Reaves, etc)

Shit happens, hopefully it's nothing serious.

I think the Leafs without Matthews is an easy 1st round out.

You're delusional if you are not concerned with a C line of Tavares, Kampf, Domi and Holmberg.

This will get eaten alive.

Do you not know what the Kucherov / Stone move is or did you just not read my comment?

So who's the top 6 C you are targeting?

I think Leafs were lucky to win that much without him in November. Wheels will fall off at some point.

Matthews comes back for game 1 of the playoffs. They use the cap space to add best players available which would be 13M.

Leafs are not trying to outscore other teams, that is why the wheels are not falling off. Sound defensive hockey.

Yeah, still, they'll suck very soon without a replacement, defensive hockey or not.

If he goes LTIR and they lose him for real for months, just watch and quote me back in a few weeks.

Yea good opportunity to load up at the deadline. A lot of adversity and lessons learned from past playoffs makes me think this might be their best chance at making a deep playoff run provided Matthews comes back healthy.

He hasn't looked right all year. Really fighting it out there.

Obviously if you're the Leafs, your number one goal is to have him in the best possible form for the playoffs.

You know, just in case.

They were fine with him out last time, should be fine again.
OP not sure if wrist, I’d say more likely back issues, and they can flare up at anytime.
