Rielly makes absolutely zero sense for the Avs. Also avs are not trading Byram who has been their best player this season and just played over 26 minutes as a rookie d man on an ELC

Don't see Avs adding Marner's cap hit to their team. When they have Makar, Rantanen and soon to sign Mack taking up a good chunk of the cap themselves. Trading Byram on ELC would be silly to if he's as good as some think. Reilly is UFA to be his value is not as high in a package as it would be at trade deadline on his own.

Slow start in Toronto, eh? 4 combined assists in 12 combined games for Marner and Rielly? Oof. At least Rielly is UFA, if this slow start doesn't correct itself.

No one can afford Marner though. The Ducks, Sens, Sabres, Blue Jackets and Red Wings are the only teams with the cap space, and I'm sure each of them has an internal cap. Plus that bonus structure...yikes. League minimum with the rest of his, averaged, cap hit of 10.9 in signing bonuses? That isn't a contract everyone can take on, even if Marner's slow start is followed up by to tier Marner for the rest of the year.

Bryam aside, that isn't a stellar return or anything, but I think Toronto fans are taking for granted their teams ability to swallow salary like it's nothing.

Regardless of the lack of thought put into this proposal, not a fan of paying $11m for a 2RW, especially at the cost of a top 4 D on ELC.

Matthews having a slow start, and Marner's #'s are down? hmmmm... coincidence?

To Toronto-
Byram
Burakovsky
Johnson

To Colorado-
Marner
Rielly
Holl

That is so awful for the Avs. Byram is untouchable. he’s been the Avs best defender by a wide margin so far. Makar playing hurt, but still. Byram is already a top pair LHD at age 20. He doesn’t even turn 21 until next summer. You could statistically make the case Byram is the Avs best player so far this season.

And No one can afford Marner’s bad contract anyway. Certainly not the Avs.

Toronto destroys the Avs in this deal. They get better and younger. Move off a bad contract to get an amazing one in Byram. Replace a top line W playing poorly with a top pair LhD that’s 20 and on an ELC.
Sakic tells Dubas to F off.

As a Leaf fan this is gross
What? Dubas would make that deal in an instant. It properly resets your team balance and gets you out of a bad contract on Marner. Frees up a ton of cap space.

TML is probably losing Reilly to UFA next summer for nothing. And Holl is a nobody.

this author was so lazy, he didn’t even specify which Johnson the Avs are trading. Erik Johnson is playing 20 minutes a game in a top 4 role right now. He’d be top pair with Byram for Toronto.

Toronto gets two top 4 (Byram top pair) defenders and a 2nd line wing in this atrocious proposal. Avs get an way overpaid top line wing. A top 4 D they don’t need hitting UFA and a nobody.

here is a counter.

Nylander, Robertson and a 3rd for Girard and Maltsev.

One would imagine that if Byram is dealt Sakic would want an extension in place with Morgan Rielly, And that's probably 7x7 very doubtful Colorado can afford Marner at nearly $11,000,000 per plus $7,000,000 for Rielly and another $11,000,000 per for Nate MacKinnon within 2 years or so.

The Avs aren't trading for Marner or Rielly. The Avs would have to get a much better return than this if they're trading Byram.

This trade makes no sense for Colorado and is a weird start to Toronto's rebuild, which is apparently what we're going for if we're making trades like this.

I mean morale is pretty low over here in Leafland for a variety of reasons but I don't think we're at the point where, bad season or not, losing your top defenseman for nothing can be considered a silver lining....at least not yet. Give it a few weeks.
