Toronto's top priority right now should be to shed cap space at the deadline. LTIR cap space cannot be used for performance bonus overages. So if things continue the way they are, we will need to carry over $4-4.5 million in bonuses into next season's cap (potentially up to 5.5 million in performance bonuses with only 1.2 million in real cap space). This will become a huge problem in 2018-19 if we must do the same while trying to contend.
The biggest issue will come in 2019-20. If we have to carry over a couple million in bonuses from 2018-19, in addition to Matthews and Marner getting new contracts, our cap could take well over a $20 million hit. Think about Chicago after they won Kane & Toews' first cup. We need to nip this issue in the butt now, and make room for these bonuses in the current season's cap.
Ideally we can find a way to move contracts like Laich, Michalek and Greening.
