Actually, as someone frequently posts, waivers aren't free. It's cheaper to trade for a guy after he clears. Sutter used to talk about that when he ran the Flames here back in the day.

My guess is St. Louis didn’t want to pay the guy 1M to play in the minors. Leafs get depth and a leader for the Marlies. Also, 1M is a drop in the bucket for them
