Talented, but hasn’t strung it all together. Hasn’t been on great teams most of his time in the A. Seems to miss one or two too many shots a game. Maybe he puts it together this year.

When I saw him live a couple of years ago you could tell the guy needed a lot of work fundamentally. Just as an observer I could tell his positioning and technique was all wrong. Granted that was a couple of years ago, I haven't seen him since.

Would be nice if a goalie we drafted actually turns out to be a stud for us for once

You look at the goalie prospects across the league and Leafs don't have a Knight or Dostal in their system. Not even close to having one of those guys yet.

Didn't Jake Oettinger back Woll up at World Juniors? This gave me hope we may have finally found our goalie... he's big and in good physical shape, hoping he has just looked bad because of the team in front of him.

The Toronto Maple Leafs drafted Riley Stotts 83rd overall in the 3rd round of the 2018 NHL draft instead of Lukas Dostal, who was drafted by the Anaheim Ducks 85th overall in the 3rd round of the 2018 NHL draft.

This is why we can't move forward. Imagine next year with a Campbell Dostal combo.

Our drafting has turned to shit.

I think the Leafs need to invest in a legitimate goalie scout. If we're relying on the same bird dogs who brought us Reimer, Sparks, Gustavsson, Rynnas, Kaskisuo, etc. you'll notice a lot of these goalies seem to be terrific reflex goalies and athletes but seem to have no idea how to play the position from a technical point of view. Clearly there's a problem where they seem to value the wrong traits and aren't seeing the street goalie tendencies.

Hopefully Woll and Scott work out differently.

I agree, I can't imagine we kept the same goalie scout all these years though without producing any legit NHL starters. Is that even true? Because I'd love a job where I get paid hundreds of thousands to not get the job done

I had a lot of hope for Scott after his final JR season where he looked unstoppable, but his injuries have really set him back to the point I don't know if he can comeback from it. I was hoping he would just kinda come in and do what Murray did for the Pens, but I guess thats asking too much.

Cause we have a terrible scouting department and a terrible development system. And the fact our management team hasn't gutted either department suggests they are also complete idiots. Sad cause we probably have the most expensive organization as well.

What?
Goalies are unpredictable.
Come and go outta nowhere.

Seems to be that way.

Now you have a few that turn out, but you can't hide them like you can non-goalies. Freddie Gauthier wouldn't have sniffed a NHL game if he was a goaltender, but as a 1st. round pick he got games.

Even NHL goaltenders from season to season are a box of chocolates.

Tyler Parsons and Jon Gillies received great reviews in Calgary and are they in the Flames plans? Is that why the Flames went out and signed the Markstrom for 36 million? And Markstrom didn't exactly receive a glowing report this year.

We gutted the scouting department in 2014, and there has been even more turnover since then (especially since Hunter left).

We just dumped Robidas and Pellerin for Wickenheiser and Goyette, and the development department was turned over in 2014 as well.

We moved on from our goalie scout/development coach when he went to Arizona for a promotion.

They have literally done what you are complaining they have not done.

I think its the goalie coach more than anything. We have tons of money at MLSE...why not go after Mitch Korn or one of his protégé's? I know some goalies that came here complained Briere was trying to change too much of their style that got them here.

Sometimes (and I think most times) it's player development rather than scouting.

If you compare the Toronto Raptors who may be the best in the league, it pretty much doesn't matter where they draft. They always develop their players into rotation players.

The Leafs just seem to be very bad at player development. You almost have to wonder how players would have turned out if they had been drafted by other teams.

As far as I know. The leafs don't have a scout for goalies. They usually defer to the goalie coach to evaluate them. Right now I think that's still Steve Briere. Before we had St. Croix and Allaire.

We had Brian Daccord for 4 years (2016-2017 until 2019-2020) before he was hired by Arizona. I don't think anyone has replaced him since, but we may decide to hire some more scouts once Covid is done. We've lost something like 5 scouts since the start of Covid, and only one new guy has been hired (see below).

We only drafted Scott, Akhtyamov, and Bouthillier in that time. I don't think we signed anyone (Kaskisuo was signed before Daccord came in).

Also worth noting that Dale Derkatch was Prince Albert's Director of Player Personnel and Skills Coach when they drafted Scott 9th overall in the 2014 WHL Draft, so I am sure he had a lot to do with that pick himself.

---

Derkatch has since left and we have hired former Brandon Wheat Kings GM Darren Ritchie (back in April; I missed that) to replace his region. Our WHL output has been lacking so any improvements we can make in that area would be welcome. Our other WHL scout has been here almost as long as Dubas has been alive.

Darren Ritchie accepts position with the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs, Wheat Kings name Doug Gasper the 17th General Manager in Franchise History – Brandon Wheat Kings

Well, then we need to fire the guys hiring our new departments (Shanny and Co), and bring in a crew that can hire the best in the business, not a bunch of idiots with 0 results and the highest budget.
