Similar to the Guentzel deal assuming Pittsburgh intends on continuing to try and compete while retooling. The pick can likely move up or down based on perceived value.

TOR: Bunting 50%

PIT: Kampf, Robertson, Niemela, 2025 2nd

I'm pretty sure a trade very similar to this was proposed like a month ago and was shot down.

That's not enough of a return on Bunting to use their last retention slot on him, especially if the Penguins are taking back Kampf as a cap dump. Bunting has been on pace for 55 points with the Penguins, you're not getting him and having the Penguins retain for such a low return.

Honestly unless Toronto is including either Cowan or a 1st, I don't see anything in their system that particularly entices me to move Bunting there. Especially with the Penguins likely needing to take back a bad deal like Kampf to make the money work for Toronto. Minten is their #2 prospect and he only seems to have bottom-6 upside, which the Penguins don't need more of.

With only one retention slot being used for EK or Petts. I think Bunting has to go for a full cap hit.

Honestly I was really interested in Robertson during the summer but he has done himself and the leafs 0 favors this year.

Not really a player I consider an asset to trade for right now.

A surprising trade offer where the Penguins are the one not needing to add to it.

Like others have said, they could just trade Bunting in the offseason for more than this. Pointless to use their last retention slot without something impactful coming back.

If you are going to use the last slot, something good better be coming back which is why everyone assumes they will save it for Petersons ultimate trade or a surprise trade with EK.

Bunting is not a guy the leafs would want back

Hes failed to perform in the playoffs in his 2 years here, the refs didnt like him with his diving and he now makes too much money.

Hopefully leafs stay away from Bunting as it didnt work before and he isnt going to be cheaper to get than 900K last time around

That's fine, my point was just that Toronto doesn't have anything appealing beyond Cowan or their 1st that I'd want back for Bunting. If Toronto doesn't want him either, that makes it easy.

Sure, thats fair.

Teams want more value than players are worth all the time

Leafs wanted more for kessel then pens gave up

Pens wanted more for guentzel than they got

I find it unlikely Bunting gets Cowan or 1st type asset. That type of value is closer to Pettersson type deal

He probably doesn't, that wasn't me saying "this is what he's worth". It just looks like Toronto's prospect pool is ugly and they don't have any assets beyond those two that would be appealing.

Like I said, Minten is their #2 prospect and he has like borderline 3C/4C upside according to Wheeler. That plus a 2nd (what Bunting's value is likely around) isn't a very appealing trade.

It probably would be appealing to Kyle Dubas since he's a jackass who can't resist what he sees as his 'accomplishments'. I guarantee that Nick Robertson will end up in a Penguins uniform in the near future.

Pens will move players if the deals make sense. Dubas doesn't have to move anyone. Bunting is a player that can bring back a decent return. Pens are not in any hurry here. they will move a couple players at the draft or off season. Karlsson, Rust to me and Petts are higher priorities.

Fully that diving reputation doesn't really seem to have followed him to CAR and PIT.

I'd honestly be fine with bringing in Robertson. Another Tomasino like reclamation project.

Pens are working on a quick rebuild. Youth movement is happening. We're going to have a LOT of cap space this summer with half the team playing on ELCs and cheap contracts. Curious to see what Dubas does with it all. A top 6 with Robertson and Marner would be hillarious.

Agree that this is a hilarious thought, just for different reasons.

Anyways Leafs are going to save any assets for a centre. Makes zero sense to spend on Bunting.
