Proposal: - TOR-PHI | Page 2 | HFBoards - NHL Message Board and Forum for National Hockey League

Proposal: TOR-PHI

To PHI: Woll, Cowan
To TOR: Tippett, Hathaway

I recently proposed Cowan for Foerster straight up and it was shot down by Philly fans because Foerster was too important to the team. I am back with an improved proposal to pluck from the strongest RW depth in the league. Philly's goaltending depth at the NHL level is probably the worst in the league. Woll steps in and immediately is their #1 and he is signed for 3 more years at 3.67M. Even if they bring in Demko, Woll's number is reasonable to play 1B to Demko and they have a relationship (Woll was recruited to play at BC by Demko). Cowan gets to keep playing with Barkey and Bonk and Philly can bring them through the AHL together. Tippett and Hathaway are big losses but Philly have Konecny, Foerster and Brink as RS RW along with whatever forwards they acquire with their mountain of cap space.

Toronto need RS forwards badly. They currently have Nylander and Jarnkrok who will soon be traded. Tippett would be a huge boost to their top 6 with Marner leaving and Hathaway is the first step towards building a 4th line that can actually play Berube style hockey. Woll is a big loss but I will not be surprised if Treliving re-signs Stolarz this summer to a 4 or 5 year deal and brings in his guy Vladar to back him up. Cowan is their only prospect of note but he likely never has the same impact that Tippett will while Matthews is on his current contract.
So we get older with zero upside….ummmm NO

the 4th line is the furthest need this team has.
Couldn't disagree more. The Leafs were caved in when Matthews and Tavares lines weren't on the ice in the playoffs (37% GF, 37% xGF, 33% HDCF). They need legitimately good players in their bottom 6. Hathaway would be a key piece to a 4th line that can actually hold it's own. The Leafs will never create a 1st/2nd/3rd line that outscores Florida's 1st/2nd/3rd lines but they can definitely build a 4th line that will win their minutes.

They need a third line far more than a 4th line. They have a good 4th line already.

We have no 2C / 3C depending where Tavares is at
We have no 3rd line at all.
We have almost no offense from our blue line
We are losing Marner and need to replace him with at least 2 top 6 guys.

All much larger needs than the 4th line

Marner scored 27 goals with some of the best players in the league.

Tippett scored 20 goals in Torts defensive system with some of the inept players in the league in a few less games.

If Tippett played with Toronto’s offense with his shots he’d probably have just as many goals.

Marner is a better 2-way passer but he’s gone Tippett would be a cheaper right shot replacement so that Nylander could stay at 1RW.

Lorentz-Laughton-Jarnkrok that had 25% goal share in the playoffs?

You're allowed to add multiple players in one off-season!

With just this trade I view it as:

Knies-Matthews-Tippett
Marchand-X-Nylander
Laughton-Tavares-X
X-X-Hathaway

I view it like

Line 1 LW Knies C Matthews RW Nylander
Line 2 LW McMann C Tavares RW Tippett
Line 3 LW Robertson C Domi RW Jarnkrok
Line 4 LW Laughton C Holmberg RW Hathaway

1st Pair LD McCabe RD Tanev
2nd Pair LD Rielly RD Carlo
3rd Pair LD Benoit RD Ekman-Larsson

Goalies:
Starter: Stolarz
Backup: Hildeby

Scratches:
C Kampf
RD Myers

Add significant forward or two at deadline.

The proposal significantly weakens Philly’s forward group in the short term, which is great for the Gavin McKenna sweepstakes.

I’m on board with this proposal as it suits both teams.

Is this a trade Tocchet would agree to? He just signed on to a huge deal. Clearly he’d have input in trades that involve roster players. Not too sure he’d like this?

It's cool and everything untill you'll see Tippett playing. With him on the line I doubt Matthews will score even 40 goals...

I’d have to agree, Tippett is nowhere near the passer or playmaker Marner is, as they are two completely different type of players.

I do give Tippett credit for looking for the scoring opportunities shooting and also keeping his feet moving, Owen isn’t as good as Marner defensively either.

Matthews needs someone like Michkov, but I doubt Flyers will trade Matvei (despite Matvei is Russian version of Matthew).
