Michigan
To NJD: McMann, Woll
To TOR: Mercer

Markstrom is a pending UFA and didn't have a great season. Woll comes in and platoons with Markstrom for a year before taking the #1 role. Woll better fits the timeline of NJD core moving forward. McMann is a stop-gap replacement for Mercer who has blistering speed and scored at a 20 goal rate since breaking into the NHL. Keefe obviously has familiarity with both.

Toronto does this because Mercer comes with upside which they need to gamble on with Marner walking out the door. Potentially add a 3rd or 4th from NJ side.

I think Woll for sure will be a number 1 goalie but he probably needs another year with very good stats for him to be valued that way. I'd do the trade from a Toronto stand point but it's definitely not the first trade I'd shoot for.

I think this is fair value but I actually liked Markstrom this season. When the team was playing well he was on fire, and he had a great playoffs (except for a period in game 5). Struggled in the regular season after he returned from injury but I like his game. For the money Woll makes the devils could probably retain Jake Allen and keep Mercer while trying to trade defenseman to add to the forward group. Still have Nico Daws in the system if they want to go with a young back up option anyway who would make minimum dollars.

The value is pretty good, if anything, I think it overrates Mercer and underrates Woll here.

I just struggle to see the Devils making this move unless they can clear salary elsewhere.

Woll as a backup at 3.67 AAV is likely way more than they were planning to spend. Devils probably go with Daws at around 850k and get another cheap sub 1mil goalie to challenge him for that spot.

Spending that money on a backup is going to cut into the Devils ability to upgrade the center group too. McMann provides a third line version of Mercer, but there’s still a need for some scoring winger and very limited funds to make that happen with Luke needing an extension.

I think the Devils would pass based just on fit alone, unless they really value McMann and think Mercer has peaked.

Given that daws has had several cups of coffee in the league the last few years (with up and down results) and is no longer waiver eligible, I suspect they will give him a chance to hang with the big boys and be the backup. This is a cap strapped team. Paying < 1m for a backup goalie next year is important

A big part of the Leafs’ success last year was due to their goalie tandem. It allowed them to get their goalies adequate rest and the goalies pushed each other to be better. I want the Leafs to make moves but trading Woll would be near the bottom of the list of things they need to do.
