He's on his first one-way contract, which could be a minor disincentive to another team claiming him. If they hoped to send him down, he would have needed to clear waivers again and then they would pay him at the NHL rate.

The Leafs signed him, and would obviously be fine with sending him down and paying him if there are no other claims.

Nice contract for a 30 y.o. fringe undrafted defenceman.

The Leafs could use another depth defenceman like him on the the Marlies as well.

Part of me wonders if the Leafs are setting up for a move.

They kept Myers, they got Mermis back.

They have at least 8 games with some level of NHL experience

I don’t think resigning their #7 and reclaiming their depth AHL guy means anything.
Especially considering both of them were originally signed this summer without it being part of setting up for a move.

I don't think so. Unless Hakanpaa is cooked and we have the LTIR space for the rest of the season.

Yes, I think you're right.

Any time you see an NHL GM lock down a minor league depth defenseman, and then claim another minor league deep depth defence man, it usually is the sign of a big transaction coming.

Now the Leafs can move out players without worrying how it will effect the Marlies bottom six defenseman.

For those interested, this cost Utah $7,500, paid to Toronto and not counted against the cap.

Players claimed this season: 19
Total compensation: $539,250
Wouldn't this have cost Toronto the $7500 paid to Utah? Utah would have paid Toronto for the initial claim, now Toronto has to pay them for the re-claim (unless I am misunderstanding how that works)
