He’ll have a year left and will be asking for the most money in the league.

I dont think so, I would guess the cap the next 4 years goes roughly ~87M, ~90M, ~93M, ~96M... So then he's a UFA at $99-100M.

But either way whether it's $95M or $105M he's getting the bag in 4 years.

He might honestly be the first guy to get a $20M aav.

No matter what anyone says this is a “fair” contract. Honestly I think as a UFA he could’ve done far hetter

Four years is such a joke.

Biggest contract in the league after scoring like half as much as McDavid is an even bigger joke.

Dude better be a top-3 player in the league from here out. Or at least be more impactful than Marner.

I mean last contract he took 5 years instead of 8. This AAV [13.25M] was around the salary he was requesting on an 8 year deal back in the day.

So thinking of it as a 9 year deal at 12.4 average. Not terrible

Draisaitl has probably already sent him a text and thanking him for raising the yearly cash for superstars... Drai will hit the 14+ mark next and then McDavid after that will hit the 15+
Drai and McDavid probably re sign for 13.5 x 8

I hope it's Colorado who gives it to him then.

Yeah yeah yeah, just like he was surely going to leave Toronto next summer.

It's not about leaving Toronto, it's about maxing career earnings under a rising cap and maintaining the flexibility to do so. Whether that's in Toronto or not.

Good lord Matthews' agent took Treliving to the cleaners. Gotta get a couple more years for that kind of money. That said, can Arizona hang on an additional 4 years? I was assured Matthews was going to be a Coyote!

Marner's will probably hurt just as bad.

It’s only a 1.6M raise over his last deal. Kicks in before next season and with the cap rising, it’s definitely a better deal for the Leafs than his previous one

Yeah, my original post was about all the people who tried to convince themselves and others over the last several years that he'd walk out on Toronto next summer.

I never had any doubt he would be looking out for himself only and the team really doesn't matter.

This guy is all about the $$$$$$$$$$$.

Anyone trying to defend only giving Matthews 4 years is out to lunch. Matthews is going to be an elite player well into his mid to late 30s. Not being able to get him long-term at this AAV is horrible for the Leafs.
Let’s see if his wrist can hold up until he’s 30 let alone mid 30’s

That's not usually the case. Toews had massive health issues. What about Crosby? Or Malkin? Or Ovechkin? Not worth the money at 34?
Your anecdote rebuttal to that post is here are the three best players of the entire generation who also happened to age well?

Toews and Kane fell off. Kovalchuk fell off. Rick Nash fell off. The number of guys who didn't fall off in their mid 30s is short. Iginla fell off. Stamkos isn't as good as he used to be.

Ovy is basically the only goal scorer in history that hasn't fallen off.

I don't think drai is going to look to be paid more. I really think he will want 12-13. Him and McDavid are team players.
