To TOR: Walman
To EDM: McMann

To TOR: Moore
To LAK: OEL

EDM/TOR: McMann and Walman are both pending UFAs. Edmonton has 4 NHL LD making a total of 21.4M. This is by far their deepest position. McMann is a big body, shoot first winger who has averaged 22G/82GP since he became a full time NHLer while splitting time between Tavares and Domi as his C. He has the speed to keep up with McDavid and would fit nicely at 1LW allowing RNH or Hyman to play with Draisaitl. Edmonton is also his local team (although 200KM away) and he probably re-signs there. Walman brings some youth to Toronto's back end and is probably a better player than OEL today. He also provides some flexibility on defense as his contract expires next summer.

LAK/TOR: LAK seem poised to lose Gavrikov and will have a few holes to fill in their defense. OEL helps fill 2LD for the time being. He was great in Toronto this season playing over 21 minutes/game this year and winning his minutes. He can help bridge the gap in LA. Moore can play 3LW with Tavares and brings a more well rounded scoring game than McMann (who is very shoot first). He also takes minutes on the PK where the Leafs are about to lose all of Kampf, Jarnkrok, Lorentz and Marner.

The overall rationale for both trades (from a Leafs POV) is I believe McMann likely walks after this season and the Leafs shift their long-term money from defense (OEL 3 years remaining) to offense (Moore 3 years remaining). The Leafs have 7 defenders signed for the 26-27 season and only 4 forwards, one of them being Kampf who is likely out. The Leafs also take on a total of 2.75M for 2025/26 in these two trades.

Oilers will pass.
They are banking on Frederic to be their Bobby McMann. Walman will be Ekholm replacement after next season.

I have been loosely following the media around the Frederic deal and I thought they envision him as a long-term 3C (acknowledging the fact that he hasn't played full time C in the NHL).

I don't think anyone credible has thought that though. He's a winger, until he proves otherwise. If they want to try him at 3C and hope it works out, bonus, but for now, he's a winger.

First off walmans not a ufa and in no world do they trade a tip four dman for a third fourth line tweener.

I'm confused you asked who said they were UFAs and then quoted yourself saying they're pending UFAs. Did you mean after next year?
Correct. Both players expire after the upcoming season. I understand how someone can read that and interpret it as pending UFA in 10 days but they are obviously UFAs after the 25/26 season.

I would be all for getting Moore if LA is willing to trade him, for the reasons OP laid out.

And I'd gladly give up McMann for a decent return. In OP's proposal, it only makes sense to get Walman if OEL (or another blueliner) is moved so I'd be open for a forward who doesn't have his shot but brings a heavy forecheck or perhaps better a 3C that brings some offense and isn't a defensive liability.

Edmonton just traded a first for Walman specifically because he had some term. They’re not turning around and selling low on him after a very good playoffs. McMann is a good third liner but isn’t remotely high end enough to move the needle, and at already 29 years old he’s likely peaked. It might be a different story if he was 23.

Both players have the same term and are the same age.

If peaking is scoring 20 goals while spending half your season with Domi as your C that is pretty good. What is that number next to McDavid?

And at 29, Walman is a significantly better player than McMann. a #3 defenceman is far more valuable than a third line forward. Edmonton doesn’t want to trade Walman, they want to extend him, and if they were, we’d be asking for a bigger piece than McMann.

Why is a #3 5th in ice time among defenseman?

Rather have cap space & a pick back for Moore. OEL isn't really what the King's need to add right now.

It's not July 1st yet. "Pending UFA" is universally understood to be in the next signing eligibility period.

I understand why it was misinterpreted but also - given we're 10 days out I think it's universally accepted to refer to a player like Marner as a UFA, not a pending UFA. If people can't understand that both players in the proposal are UFAs next summer then I am sorry.
