You also look really stupid if you give up a pick for the rights and don't sign him. A trade without a deal in place shifts the leverage to Tanev and his agent.

realistically what's the chances of that? by all accounts he's been Brad's #1 targwt since he got here

Tanev will get signed

But Dreger and co said we can't offer 8 years because he wasn't here before the trade deadline? So it'd be 7 years either way no?

For the tenth time I am just asking why I'm not crying over a seventh

you don't need to ask why because it's obvious, he wants to ensure he gets the guy who has been his #1 target since the day he got here.

this trade does that

There’s absolutely no way for you to know that. There are plenty of D who play effectively in this league well beyond 35
Its a pretty much guarantee based on other comparable players

Ryan Suter --> elite #1D who fell to good top pair to an unplayable player on dallas

Giordano --> we got as a great 4D who by this year is retirement worthy

Brodie --> fell off to a bottom pairing defenseman

PK subban

Ryan Mcdonaugh

etc etc,;

Tanev isnt a top end d-man who will be able to provide offense when his defensive game falls off.

Tanev has been injury prone his whole career, gives 0 puck offense and isnt a physical clearing the net type of player

He would be a good #3RD add sure. At 2 years 2-3M that is a value add and winning move

He cant be a top 4D for us

XXX - XXX
Rielly - XXX
McCabe - Tanev

That is a great dcore

Marner --> Need to become a 1LD or 1RHD

2RD --> Pesce, Montour or Skeji on their offside, Roy in the worst case scenerio

Leafs adding a filler piece like tanev to the same core 4 who are 15M overpaid for their repetitive underperformances in the playoffs wont change anything for this team

Givinv tanev 3.5M x 6 or whatever is rumored wont help us

I heart being exclusive. No scabs, no weasels, and last minute GMs with ill-intentions.

He's ours. He's exclusively ours to negotiate with.

You don't like today's offer. You'll love tomorrow's offer.

We're exclusive!!!!!

Next up:

A promise ring!

Hes Giordano from 2022. In 2 years he will be unplayable

Horrific contract about to be given

Boston in 7 lives on with these sort of shitty moves
Nope. when we traded for Giordano in 2022 he was 37, and was good for us for about a year and a half. When Giordano was Tanev's age he had the best season of his career.

You hope to get 2 great seasons out of Tanev, 1-2 decent ones, and let LTIR shenanigans and the rising cap take over when things start going south.

Why do people care so much if this is a long term deal? He’s got 2-3 years left in him , we can worry about it after that .
Ya, I've seen this story before, where we staple draft picks to get him off our team, no big deal because we're chalk full of draft picks aren't we...

Mirtle and someone named Rachel Doerrie have suggested it. Dreger confused the rule altogether. Mirtle sucks. Those are the ones saying it.

I don't buy it.
Regardless of your personal vendetta against media members, they generally know more than you.

Keep ignoring that this isn't a 35+ contract....

Future LTIR
I am excited to see an overpayment in term and AAV for a man made of glass.

I hope they play this smart.
Smart alright future longtime LTIR play when our highest paid superstar signs his next deal 3yrs @17,171,717.

Get it? all those 17s (17+17=34)

When are you going to realize that having someone on LTIR isn't a good thing. It's not something you should plan to go in to.

I don’t understand this move at all. We really going to rely on a 35 year old to log real minutes?

You just placed a top 30 dman as your #3 and two top 4 dmen as your 3rd pairing. If you can find 2 dmen better than Rielly plus add Pesce/Montour/Skjei, then you'd easily have the best defense core in the NHL and it's really a very unrealistic ask.

To put it into perspective, you're putting more than 8m worth of defense talent as a 3rd pairing (re-signing McCabe right now would cost a lot more than what we are paying).

Giordano is 40. He stunk this year but was good last year. Tanev hasn’t even turned 35 yet and we’d only be looking for 4 years out of him probably which he’s perfectly capable of giving. The rest of the years just artificially lower his AAV. That’s it.

Tanev is still a very good defender and a clear top 4 and there’s no reason to assume he won’t be for a while still. And when he can’t we’ll get out of the contract either by LTIR, or a cheap trade (because the salary will be low).

Some stability with Rielly would be so welcomed.

With a $100M cap basically 2 years away. $3-3.5M is going to be bottom pairing money in short order.
