Great deal.

While it's fair to say Dubas has overpaid his star players, Toronto does have an advantage as many Canadian players still want to play there at some point of their career. Many US markets have the tax-advantage, but I would say that Toronto doesn't have to overpay compared to say Winnipeg.
The key for Dubas is going to be to keep finding these low money guys that play above their salary and cycling through them. The Hymans, Buntings, etc. Gio on this contract. Even guys like Spezza are effective for what they're being paid.

Similar to Spezza and Simmonds, they just need more players in their prime to want to play with them. The only one off the top of my head is Tavares in recent years.
If Tavares was in his prime at the time then he was at the very least standing at the top of the hill looking down.

Jeff O'Neill was talking about the pros and cons "Blue and White disease". Toronto Area players wanting to play in Toronto. He used Spezza's comment of "I only want to play in Toronto" as a negative, like do you want a guy who it's Toronto or nothing because is he hungry enough to win, is it just good enough to play for the Leafs?

I would lean the other way on this one though, that Gio is still a plus and could have gotten much more elsewhere. I just don't understand the 2nd year, other than it basically being maybe the $1.6M on a 1yr that he would have got elsewhere.

If they run this exact same team back next year it’s going to be scary. I wouldn’t wanna match them first round, that’s for sure.
Even with the loss I still feel like that Tampa series was a toss up that could have gone either way. Need to raise the bar again but they were in the same league and felt like a pretty even series.

Unreal. Leafs blue line has come a long way from the Phaneuf and Gardiner days. Or the Hainsey and Zaitsev days. Or the Ceci and Barrie days.

Yeah. I dig this.

It’s a 5 star signing at that AAV. Great piece of work Dubas.

Minor tweaks and trade deadline deal for Top goalie - for a huge futures and prospect deal.
Then look out.

Great contract and absolutely no risk for the Leafs even if Giordano turns into dust next season. It's so low you can bury it entirely in the AHL.

Gio doing Leafs a big favor signing for 800k a year, but come on lets quit acting like Dubas is a genius for this move. Hes a borderline #4, more suited for #5 spot. Leafs still gotta lot of work to do.
