This isn't just a Steve Simmons thing by the way. We've heard that rumor during the playoffs that Hawk may be done for good and his injury his similar to what Bishop had. Now Bish said when he retired if he was a skater he could still play but almost no muscle in your knee and bone on bone can't be good as a skater either.

Dallas playing it smart. Let Hakanpaa walk to Toronto knowing he was injured and that the Leafs would be forced to trade for Lyubushkin again, then sign Lyubushkin.

Free picks.

With him, Reaves and Domi, the Leafs are going to be shorthanded constantly.

He can replace Bert's dumb penalties per 60.

Not sure who will replace the scoring though....

Weird summer. We have 3 rh shots now. Guess he's 3rd pair or 7 but more size and hits are welcome. Our system should insulate him a bit. Cautiously optimistic.

Was there a single incident where he injured his knee, or was it slowly just getting worse and to the point he couldn't play anymore?

It happened at some point in 22-23 and got worse during that season to the point he was just awful during the 23 playoffs. In the offseason he didn't get any surgery on it done but completely conservatively . At the start of last season he looked fine for about 1 month or 2 afterwards he game fell of incredibly badly . Barely able to move anymore almost stationary. Which lead to him getting shut down in March and he has not played since. At first it sounded like oh don't worry "he's coming back" . First it was supposedly before the playoffs started , then at the start of the playoffs and then during the WCF but he never did and afterwards it was revealed he was not coming back at any point. During the playoffs that rumor about him beeing done with hockey was floated by some Stars beat writers.

Considering Bert was a complete plug until Matthews and Domi dragged him to 20g late in the season when the line got formed, I think we will be fine.

What’s with the reports that his knees are completely done and he won’t play?

Why sign someone this injured? Then there’s Tanev. And an old OEL. That blue line carries a TON of risk. Like if it doesn’t go perfectly, the Leafs season could tank.

Hakanpaa is low risk, if he doesn't play again they put him on LTIR, if he does, then he's decent-ish in a #6 role

Sure, buriable. But sounds from some reports it’s almost a for sure Hakanpaa is done. Still a weird signing.

But I guess the Leafs signed broken down Murray and thought they could fix him. I think Toronto thinks their medical staff are literal miracle workers or something.

If his knee is as bad as some reports say, he won't be LTIRed, but the contract will be voided because of failing a physical. Happened to Joel Kiviranta with Avs the past season or the one before.

Wouldn’t be surprised. Actually Leafs are up there with the LtIr f***ery as much as Vegas with their whole Robidas island thing.

Not really.

The Leafs bury their problem-children on LTIR... once they go on LTIR, they seemingly never return.

Vegas has used LTIR as a means to stack a playoff roster.

Interesting to note that as of right now, the Leafs signings (OEL, Mermis & Tanev) are all appearing on the Leafs roster, but Hakanpaa does not.

Perhaps this might suggest that the Leafs and Hakanpaa's team have simply agreed to terms, without actually registering a contract?
