Some players play till they're 40; but those players are typically hall of fame level like Chris Pronger or Duncan Keith.

Then you have a 2nd pairing d-man like Tanev and everyone here knows there's a 0% chance he plays this contract out. It's purpose is for buy out in the remaining years.
I agree
And even if by some miracle he does play it out- the remaining few years won’t be anywhere near where he is right now.

There is not really any argument- it is not a +35 contract. Tanev has been pretty healthy the last couple of years. The fact that he can "waive if he wants" is just a fact. There is no solace to be taken. It is not a horrible contract at all.

I was right with you until the bolded. It remains to be seen if it will work out for Toronto, but it’s one of the worst contracts in the league. Even the best case scenario where he’s on LTIR for like the last 2-3 years, he’s still a burden because you don’t accumulate capspace throughout the year.

You do understand that Leaf fans don't care about years 5 and 6 right?

This is about years 1-3 and MAYBE year 4.

You said the remaining few years he won't be what he is now that's true.

But he's here now for what he is NOW.

Not what he will be in 2029 and 2030.

In 2024-2025, the year we are in NOW he's going to make a BIG difference to the defense

so basically in 4 years you’re gonna have to buy the guy out? What happens if you have to sign Cowan and he isn’t able to sign then because of other contracts?

Tanev is good but he’s not 26. He’s 34-turning 35 in December and is at that age when players start to decline. Hate to see where he is 3 years from now let alone 6

He’ll be sipping pina coladas on a beach somewhere when season 5 and 6 hit . Maybe chez Robidas ?

The term doesn't matter for the Leafs' window, it lines right up with it.

People cite no tax states as having an advantage, but Toronto won this player by being able to offer that term with no regard to the consequences which the Stars just can't do even if their AAV was higher.

The bottom line is that Toronto used the tools at their disposal to secure a massive immediate upgrade. And exactly the type of player they've missed.

Why are the Leafs "gonna have to buy the guy out"?

Agreement in place to lower aav and going on LTIR after 3 years...solid plan
It is. And it is for every team that does the same trick. All it costs is money when such players sail off to each team's own Robidas Island. And in Toronto, what do they care, they have money to burn....smart plan.

He's probably insured. So it's not the money. But being into LTIR is not good and does hurt the team more than most can understand.

Some have already given up on this core winning a cup. Those who haven't, probably only have a small number of years left before they also lose faith.

Tanev will contribute during those years, which is what's important. If he sucks in the finals years, it'll only be a problem if he's already won a cup as a Leaf - and at that point, he did what they set out to accomplish anyways.

6yrs is too long, but given the context and team goals - it makes sense to keep the cap hit down while it matters more.

Oh my God the cope in here..arguing what to call a contract. Winning the semantics argument, congratulations.

TOR management gave a 34 year old injury prone middle D 6 years with a full NMC at full market rate.

It's a horrible move. I guess taking solace in the fact that "he can waive it if he wants" makes it less horrible.

Tanev agent deserves a bonus

It's not full market rate. The length definitely brought down the AAV. If this was for two years he'd be getting $6M+ easily.

There is no argument for Zadorov being a more effective player at this point and he makes more. He makes a whopping $700k more than Joel Edmundson and you call this market rate?

Right now Tanev is unquestionably one of the best defensive defensemen in the league. If he's on your second pair than your defense is stacked. He will be on the top pair in Toronto. Aside from possibly Matt Roy, this was the single biggest impact signing on defense the Leafs could have made to improve their group for the present. It makes a lot of sense for a team in clear win now mode.

Making it past the second round it would be worth it lol but I'm still sacrificing my first born for a cup don't worry he understands 😁

This is a retirement contract, nothing more. Leafs have become a country club once again. Treliving is dumb, and MLSE is dumb for letting Shanny and Treliving waste their money.
Dubas wasted all their money AND more importantly their plentiful assets and then he GTFO. He experimented with trying to reinvent the wheel and create a soft puck possession team and it failed miserably.

Say what you want about Babcock...but if he was gm, Moore, Kadri and Hyman wouldnt have gone anywhere. They were his favorite players. likely wouldve been signed long term to excellent contracts. He didnt like Marner because he was a small winger, and he doesnt value them as much as D and centers. Looks like he wasnt wrong. Hes a coach...for a long long time, he knows how successful small wingers are in playoffs and how valuable centers and defenders are.

It absolutely is full market rate. If they didnt add the 6th year, the deal wouldn't have been done. They won bidding war.

Good to see some of the posters back after another disappointing season, telling the rest of us how this is so going to work this time.

Rinse and repeat, sign veteran players, team does not make it past the 1st round, this team is trash trade them all.

Off season starts, ah man this year is our year did you see who we just signed.
How dare fans hope for the best with their team!?!?!!!
