Confirmed with Link: [TOR/CBJ] LD Mikko Lehtonen to CBJ for G Veini Vehvilainen

I think it's just a bit of a laugh at the usual suspect Leafs fans. Labeling Lehtonen the best defenseman outside the NHL and a top 4 dman. Arguing on the main boards until they're blue in the face just how good Lehtonen is and how amazing he's gonna be.

Then, same fans are very happy that he was traded for the Jackets 3rd goalie.

It's just funny to laugh at.

So very true.

Where's Matt Finn these days?

Is there any salary cap savings from this move?

I feel like this the first step to acquire something bigger

Why? The Marlies were brutal in front of him. He still has a ton of upside and plenty of time to develop. Same with Scott. Vehvilainen never had that kind of upside and still doesn't.

Can't blame the team for an .880sv% in the ahl.

As for upside, that's usually just a way of saying "big and athletic".

I have a feeling he was not thrilled with signing just to be sat as a 7th D for the season. He could be more valuable in CBJ where they could use a PP QB.

Don't they have Jones and werenski already?

Anyways, funny to see the amazing cbj defense in need of our scraps.

There’s no cap savings and and why would this have anything to do with another deal ?

all this looks like is Lehtonen had enough of sitting and wanted out or they were opening up a way to slide Marty into the lineup if an injury pops up , lol

Jones is massively overrated. They could use an offensive element to their D while Bogosian is more valuable to our roster.

If there was salary cap savings than I thought maybe it was to clear room for another deal

Opportunity is limited for him to play. Leafs have a legit D core now not like years passed. The guy needs to play if he’s going to secure any term - contract as a free agent next season. It wasn’t going to happen after signing Brodie and Bogo. This d could very well be together for the coming years. Bottom pairing due to contracts could be interchangeable but I don’t see Dermott (local boy) or Bogo (local to NY area and has made a lot of money and playing for a contender) signing elsewhere

The vast majority of people who have commented have not said they feel his value is equal to a 3rd string goalie. We recognize that CBJ got the better player, and most still think he will be an NHL player. He was not good enough to cement himself in our top 6, and to KD’s credit, he has given him an opportunity elsewhere. Nothing more to look into on this. We still think Mikko is a good defensman. And I can only speak for myself, but I hope he does well in CBJ. He deserves the opportunity

No, it is not all on the team or the defense. They definitely did not put him in a position to succeed either. If you are counting on a rookie goalie to bail you out every night, and that was the case for almost every single night last year, then things are not going to look pretty.

And no, upside means they have technique and the mental game too. Kaskisuo was "big and athletic" and nobody said he had major upside. Bibeau was also big and athletic, but his atrocious positioning and technique was going to keep him from being an NHL goalie. Woll has everything you want and need out of an NHL goalie, but he rarely looked comfortable and that comes from the team in front of him. He needs to gain his confidence and work on certain things, but nothing is stopping him from becoming an NHL goalie in a couple of years.

If we write off every promising goalie prospect we have after one choppy season (especially when they had multiple good seasons prior to that), we are never going to develop a goalie. Simple as that.

I guess we just have a really good defense. As Keefe has said, our defense has played so well that unless we purposely decided to take a guy out or play with 7D (outside of injury, which hasn't happened fortunately), he hasn't had much of a chance to play.

This is the same defense that has Dermott playing 12 and a half minutes a night despite showing that he can easily handle 18+ minutes.

Would have been nice to have kept some trusted depth on hand who you know won't hurt you. Could this be a goodwill trade, both to the player and also to CBJ? They wanted in on Lehtonen same as leafs. CBJ still has a window on a playoff spot so maybe a gentleman's agreement that if CBJ becomes a seller, maybe someone like David Savard might be offered up.

I don’t understand this trade at all. I mean why not just hold on to him for a year at least

You could have that goalie for something else

Lehtonen looked like an NHLer

I'm fine with letting Lehtonen move along elsewhere.

It just wasn't working out. He's 27 y.o. and probably hears the clock ticking on his career, and might be in a rush to make a some money in the NHL.

He had plenty of opportunity to take Dermott's place on the roster but it was too high a hill to climb.

He had no real future with the Leafs.

Lehtonen was a bust here. I mean that with the deepest of respect. He could not supplant Dermott, and that is not good for a guy who was considered one of the best Euro / non NHL players. Perhaps he'll go on to be better than Dermott, or he could be the next Vesey.

The Leafs don't want to recruit him and then block his career.

Time is money for a 27 y.o. rookie defenceman.

This year he couldn't compete with Dermott.

Next year he would either be sitting -- most likely -- or playing and blocking the path of Liljegren or Sandin.

He's older and doesn't have the upside of any of those guys.

It was a nice try, but it didn't work out here and its time for everyone to move on. Maybe he'll have better luck elsewhere, and the Leafs are preserving their reputation by doing him this favour to help advance his career.

It just goes to show you how tough the NHL is. Maybe he could have stuck on a lesser team, maybe not. Dermott and Bogosian are certainly not star players.

We needed some goalie depth with the uncertainty around Freddy/Campbell and didn't have another goalie on contract to allow us to send down Woll.

The team must feel like Liljegren is more than ready to make the jump and in reality he should be the next guy in with the way he's played.

Marincin/Rosen are fine as depth guys until Sandin is back.

I feel like this is a weird precursor to a larger trade with these two teams though and we got the easy pieces out of the way first. Sort of like the Polak/ Spaling and then Reimer trade to San Jose.
