Proposal: [TOR/CAR] Blockbuster: Matthews and Rielly for Slavin and Aho

Aho @ 6 years x 9.75
Or
Matthews @ 3 years x 13.25
And the next 3 years are probably something like 17-18m.

Team building wise id much much prefer aho and slaving being locked up for the next 6-7 years, than paying matthews/rielly more on shorter contracts with the risk they leave in a few years. The upgrade (if there is one) isn't worth the uncertainty and extra cap.

Obviously the problem with the Canes in the playoffs is that we don't have an underperforming superstar center that gives us regular season oomph, so we need to trade away our elite defensive defenseman who performs exceptionally well every game and star center who gives steady results for him.

Maybe we could raise our average attendance from 100.6% to 101% if we did that

This would definitely shake up both rosters. IMO I think Carolina would be dumb not to do this.

The Rangers gave up a very similar package with Ryan McDonagh and JT Miller and didn't pull in anything close to Auston Matthews. Getting Morgan Rielly would be just gravy. Also, Rielly is they type of defenseman that typically performs well in the Brind'Amour system.

He isn't getting 17-18 with a bum wrist or w/e his consistent injury is.

This trade is like moving around deck chairs on the proverbial playoff Titanics

Watching Aho score 2 goals tonight as his team faces elimination. Matthews has never come close to being that clutch, not to mention his much larger salary. Since Carolina always makes the playoffs, they don't need Matthews' regular season superiority. AND downgrade Slavin to Rielly? I don't think so.

The Triangle is rolling in money, the team is good, and a rudimentary search shows that "filling seats" is not a problem for a team that sells out every game.

Carolina already has superstar forwards, already fills seats to capacity, and has had routine playoff success. They need to figure out how to push past the wall they commonly encounter in the second or third rounds. Yet both Toronto players have consistently failed to thrive in the playoffs. How are they the solution to Carolina's issues? They'd be better off targeting a Bennett type to complement their mix.

Slavin's a top-tier No. 1 defenseman on an extremely team-friendly deal with lots of good term. Nikishin is a kid, eight years younger than Slavin. It will be years before he might become that caliber of player. Carolina's window is open right now. Rielly hardly makes up for the loss, and has his own travails to work through.

Carolina says no, and I doubt they need much time to consider it.
I like Carolina. I like Rod. I believe the Hurricanes roster is extremely solid and its biggest strength is depth.

That being said, no, the Hurricanes do not have superstar forwards. They have three really good forwards who would be top line or second line on almost any team in the league. But they are not super stars. Rantanen was a great player to try to bring in and extend and he didn’t want to.

If you’re going to have a roster like the Hurricanes do, you need two really good top lines that can perform interchangeably vs the other in all situations. They don’t have that and Dundon botching negotiations with Guentzel helped deter from reaching that goal.

That being said, this trade doesn’t make sense for either team.

Matthews could score 150 goals and 150 assists in the regular season, I don’t really care.

Aho playoffs: 88 gp, 83 points, .94 ppg
Matthews playoffs: 68 gp, 59 points, .86 ppg

Those are the only stats that matter to me and the rest of us fans in Carolina. Regular season is only to determine seeding and home ice for the playoffs, which is the only part of the season that matters.

We don’t even need to talk about the disparity between Slavin and Reilly, you’re talking about the best defensive defenseman in the league vs someone who is certainly and certifiably An NHL Defenseman.
