Rumor: TOR and John Tavares close to a deal: 3 years at 7 million

if my only options were re-signing JT or signing Bennett for similar money i'll take SB

-6 yrs younger
-produces slightly higher in the playoffs
-much more physical
-better defensively

Show your work on better defensively, and he produces less than Tavares in the playoffs.

Similar money is not being discussed either, it is 1-2 million more and a longer contract for someone who produces less in the playoffs.

If the Leafs were a contender you’d take Bennet 9 out of 10 times. Bennett is more physical and isn’t concerned about whether he hurts someone or not.

How would they get anything from franchise values?

Well I think putting on the Covid bubbles shouldn’t have been at the cost of the players as a start. You don’t explicitly pay for your company’s hydro, water bills, security, etc. for example.

forgot to add in my previous post SB produces more in the playoffs than JT has with us

SB also does more than just hang around the slot/crease waiting to be fed while also walking back and trailing the play to the defensive zone hoping there's a turnover so he be can fed on a breakaway

It looks like you're still more interested in continuing to fail in the playoffs since your still butt hurt your boi was kicked to the curb like the piece of shit he is !

Schenn’s line - top 70% in 5v5 scoring.
This is exactly what we need.

Need Schenn @ 3.25-4.5.

$7M x 3 is good. add on a 4th year and the cap hit comes down to $5.25M.

If they're committed to re-signing him, I'd rather go the other way: 2 x >$7M - than give him another year.

He's certainly aging well, so far, but he's 34 now. At least with your lower cap hit suggestion if he falls off a cliff production-wise it's less of a cap burden but still, a significantly slower than he is already 38yo JT could be ugly to watch and hard to shelter.

Do not want at any price. Old and getting sloooower.
He had his chance. New blood needed.

Scour the league for youth and value. JT ain't it.

If JT is willing to have a Capt hit at 4.5mil(could be after deferring).
You sign him as 3C and then sign Bennett for 8mil as your 2C.
But if JT wants a similar contract like Bennett, you say, thank you and we will make a great video tribute when you come back.

Unless Leafs win the Cup or JT led the Leafs to Cup Finals

There’s probably a lot going on behind the scenes
Mitch, JT, knies, depending how much they pay 2 may determine if they can retain all 3. Knies being only 22 would be my priority. Hard to turn down JT at 7, I feel that’s great value for a #2 center of his calibre.but It depends on how much Knies and Mitch want. If Mitch walks I can see JT asking for more. If we lose 2 of the 3 we will be a lot weaker next year. We need good value from all 3.
JT shouldn’t be a number two centre moving forward. He would be a third line winger on a cup contender and should be paid in the $4-5M range for three years max and if they flame out in the first round again the Leafs may want to use that money elsewhere

I get that Bennett is a playoff warrior in many eyes, and that’s not entirely unearned, but 7-8M is pretty poor value for a player who has never had more than 49 points in his career.
Bennett’s contributions on winning in the playoffs are far more important than just regular season scoring contributions and that’s exactly what the team needs. They have lots of guys who can pad their stats against poor competition during the regular season but fail to raise their level of play when it really matters in the playofss.

If he’s taking up 7-8M of cap, he needs to be an effective and productive regular season player as well is all I’m saying.
