JT has had exactly one good playoff series and zero with us in his entire career yet you act like he's irreplaceable , very strange thought process and why is it that you believe our only 2 choices would be re-signing JT is signing a more expensive Domi ?

I remember when walked out on the Islanders , people thought that team would be doomed for years but then they went on to have the most playoff success they had in 40 years .

Contract of EVERY PLAYER will increase. For 5, 5,5M what do you think you will get in free agency?

Or spend 7-8M for a Nelson/Granlund whos even worst in playoff?

Put all your egg on bennett and hoping he doesn't resign in florida? And hoping by miracle he choosing to play in Toronto?

Going for Gourde?

Changing for changing but you get even worst, honestly i dont know how that will make leafs a closer team to have playoff succes

There isn't a better player available for that cap hit. He's the best center available. By the day of FA he would probably be the best player available at all positions. The cap is increasing by 7-10M per year each year for the next 3 years. Each year will get a little easier to squeeze in another addition.

unless you believe the team will crumble in the regular season without former Capt Mumbles how could it get worse ?

another Leaf fan who believes it's their obligation to defend re-signing JT with their life due to believing the world will end if we don't overpay him again !

i have a question , what is it you believe will happen if the team lets him walk and uses his money elsewhere . do you think the team will crumble without JT hanging around the crease ?

better value than leasing JT has been for the Leafs !
I’ve read someone may want double that for the extra 20 points and he doesn’t score as much to boot.
Insanity

But discounts aside, if they just let him walk, who is his replacement? Who is younger and faster but available and capable of scoring 50 points? I want that player if they can afford him but I don't know who it is? People are talking Schenn who has 3 x $6.5 left and he is coming off a 46 point year and working on a 42 point season. Change is good but who could be some actual options? Who is on the market that Calgary and Philly won't be outbidding them on?

It was a big deal to maybe change the look of the team when JT was earning $11M on a $82.5 cap but $7M on a cap going from $95.5 to $113 is not remotely the same. I am not a fan of trade proposals because they seem like a pointless NHL 24 exercise but the club need options so how do you replace him with what is there to get? What do they have that would bring in someone to fill the hole? They could have had Duchene or D Strom for a low cost but that wasn't a concern to the former regime. Who is out there now (or potentially) that moves the needle?
not saying i want Schenn but how many points do you think he'd produce this year on the Leafs playing 18mins a night , 1st pp and on a line with either Willie or Marner ?

I'd easily take a play driving elite defensive 90 plus point winger at double easily over a slow weak defensive center who's a passenger and 7 years older .

that's just me though , you can have the guy who's former team that was described as a bunch of AHL'ers poor JT had to carry on his back for 9 yrs that greatly improved the second he left

Until they make change and actually get worse, there is no real way to tell if they will get worse or not. Being afraid to make change will just lead to more of the same

Yeah ok Kyle..
if i was your buddy Dumbass i would have floated a rumor through one of the company employed insiders how some mystery team(s) were waiting to offer JT 10m x 5yrs just before i re-signed him for 7m and then praised Mumbles for giving us a massive discount

until all nylander matthews marner didnt raised their game come playoff nothing will change whatever how many move you trying.

Another day, another slap in the face.
More proof that they are going to run this core until the end of time and the new big Boss is full of BS

Sounds like a good deal to me. With how much the cap is increasing the next few years, that # is not as high as a percent of the cap as it looks.
The numbers show that but what the heck is the point of giving all the finally rising cap to the same dam 4 guys that can’t get it done

Or we could just dump all the rising cap on the 4 players that can’t get it done in the playoffs…………sounds like a great plan

It's safe and easy. It's how these corporations work. Afraid to take risks. It is what it is. We will win or lose playing it safe.

Please stop with the "oh its okay, the cap is getting higher!"... Sometimes addition by subtraction is exactly what you need. I am a huge advocate of building through the draft to maintain consistent success. Remember we also need to sign Knies to a new deal, and I see him as an integral part to our future.

They are paralyzed by fear and the crazy notion that winning is impossible if they don’t keep all 4 of these guys no matter the cost.
They have somehow forgotten the last 8 years of failure

Failure to admit ones mistakes. Shanahan or the board has forced something from the shadows. I am willing to bet it was Bell and LarryT.

Either Dubas had no common sense or Shanahan OR IT WAS FROM ABOVE.

Whatever if you like it, leafs succes depend of the 3 guy ahead...If they don't raised their game, they will still losing and will never change. The leafs core, its 3 player nothing else. Any of those 3 player raising their game like they should in playoff

If leafs just move all of them, they are not a playoff team anymore

This is what I actually expected them to do

A potential thought is they're hedging bets in case Matthews leaves at the end of his current deal and it makes them easier to retool
I still think it will be a 5 year deal for the same amount of money, with some deferred if that works from a tax perspective in Canada, so that it ends up at something more like a $4.5 million cap hit.

I don't think he has that offense in him. He wasn't the big producer at center for the Blues or at least not on the pp. One 70 point season seven years ago and not a big sniper in their Stanley Cup year. If he helps them it wouldn't be mostly in point production and he doesn't really kill penalties.

They are way better if they could add him but he isnt a real #3 and probably can't push Tavares for the #2 spot. The real fit is probably O'Reilly but you buy what you can afford.

he doesn't need to have the ''offense in him'' Mitch/Will and AM will inflate his stats , i'll also tell him just to hang around the slot/crease and trail the play back to our end hoping that he gets fed in open ice if the puck turns over just like Johnny does

he should easily be a 60 plus player at the very least on our team playing the same role JT does
