Pelech would be next up. And Hickey isn't bad!

Hickey Mouse isn't that good either. He's a bottom pairing guy. Capuano is the same guy who gave Brian Strait top-4 minutes too, Hickey is his 2nd pet. He's slow, weak, and tiny. He's very smart, but zero tools.

Leddy and de Haan are the rocks of the LD group.

Forget being an isles fan for a second. As a hockey fan it's one of the biggest dissapoints that Tavares has never had an elite talent to play with and ride shotgun. Vanek was nice for a few months but I'd argue he wasn't exactly elite IMO.

Almost every other Star player has an elite player or more run with.
Crosby has Malkin Letang and James Neal once. Ovi has Backstrom and now kuznetsov. Benn Seguin. Toews Kane. Stamkos had MSL but now has Kucherov. I can go on.

I just want a winger who can skate and shoot. That's all I want.

There would have to be an add anyway because of cap implications. Isles (surprisingly!) are pretty close to the ceiling.

Really though de Haan is solid, I like him a lot. We can afford to trade him because we have good depth on the left side and he might be exposed in the expansion draft and it's a good bet that he would be taken.

Would probably consider Calvin De Haan and a small add from the Islanders for Nyquist. I think that Detroit and Brooklyn could be excellent trading partners here. Would have to admit that Nyquist on JTs wing could be pretty deadly.

The Islanders need a Unicorn delivered to us via rainbows; a cheap, bonafide #1 RW with speed that can eclipse 35g.

A 25g scoring 2nd line RW with speed and creativity would be nice too. That might only cost the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow where our owners sit but I don't see any available.

And no, Kyle Okposo is neither of the above players though letting him go without an offer was dumb.

What a mess our franchise has become again. A bunch of legitimate forward prospects and only one of them is getting a half a cup of coffee. The other is going to meetings while we see if Josh Bailey is the answer to our scoring woes.

10% of the league is eligible for the Calder and we have one rookie forward playing 8 minutes toi a night.

Why John Tavares would resign with a team that surrounds him with grinders while the rest of the league inserts skill into their lineup is beyond me

i would disagree.

goaltending is as solid as it has been in years, and defensive depth is the same.

if you are going to look at the 'bads', like JT and Ladd underachieving, how about looking at the goods too?

Nelson, Cizikas, Clutterbuck, Bailey, Boychuk... all off to very good starts. Barzal and Beauvillier showing glimpses of promise.

i feel bad for Tavares, but it's about team success, not appeasing any 1 individual.

Our team success depends on finding complementary pieces for JT while he is near his peak. Losing him to FA makes us a lottery team.

I know it would be shocking if he became available but... I have a feeling you could pry Bobby Ryan out of Ottawa...

Imagine having the Ladd and Ryan... wow

I'd argue the Isles need a scoring threat behind Tavares. Take some pressure off of his line to produce.

Kind of like Beauvillier-Strome-Quine putting up a combined 5 points last night? Kind of like the Kulemin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck line leading the team in scoring before last night's 3 point night for Tavares?

As the #1C and the alpha dog, his burden is to take on the toughest matchups so the other lines can feast on the easier ones. It's always been that way for Tavares being the tip of the spear. It would be great for him to have an elite stud running mate, but it hasn't been in the cards. The success of the team (up front at least) is dependent on the likes of Strome/Nelson/Lee/Cizikas/Clutterbuck providing the secondary scoring now. Young players/prospects like Beauvillier/Barzal/Dal Colle/Ho-Sang are knocking on that door too.

The main keys are the defense and goaltending - the true backbone of the Isles.

If you want to compete for a Cup, you're going to have to match up with Backstrom/Kuznetsov, Crosby/Malkin, Stamkos/Johnson, Thornton/Couture.

I don't see that with the Isles.

So what is your suggestion that they do? Who should they trade for then? Talking in theoreticals doesn't provide much. Who is this superstar stud that they could realistically acquire?

NYI just aren't making a high-profile trade right now. And NYI aren't trading a dman after Pulock is injured. Pelech is going to be brought shortly and all NYI have in reserve is Mayfield.

The only way NYI make a move is if it involves some combo of Brock Nelson, Anders Lee, or Ryan Strome + prospects/picks going out (but not Barzal or Beauvillier). And I don't see such packages buying a whole lot this early in the year.

It probably gets tiring seeing this name in every winger thread, but any interest in JVR from NYI fans?

NYI really need a right shot for that top line IMO. He's just not the right fit. B4 the Ladd deal, sure. Now, no.

There's not really a true right winger available who would make a material impact on the Islanders.

Any thought if I could work with swap of prospects or picks. I personally would throw a 3rd round pick in to get it done.

Kulemin is overpaid, but he plays a role on the Isles. He's strong on the PK and he fits in well with Cizikas and Clutterbuck as their LW. He has little to no trade value so he isn't going anywhere as he's more valuable to the team than anything that he could return.

The Isles have a strong prospect group already and a 3rd round pick does absolutely nothing for them. I highly doubt the Isles would have any interest in Pouliot at all.

Oddly oiler fans want either a 2nd back or half salary eaten. Tottally different perspectives I guess. I would do a 3rd plus pouliot for Kulemin.

Yeah Ladd and Ryan is a jawdropping cap hell I agree.

I agree with both. But right now we could add Ryan without giving someone up, just moving Grabo to LTIR so it is there, but Garth doesn't know if Grabo will be out the full year.
